Default LWFW question...

I saw on Gerts site you can get the whole package. But he has a RS Pressure plate option.

Is the RS plate a must? if so what difference does it make?

Thanks

Double-check the part number and the color of the paint swab (you don't want blue) on the pressure plate before you order. A LOT of shops are selling the kit with an RS pressure plate which is actually the pressure plate from the 964 RS which is in reality just the regular, normal pressure plate from the 964. i.e. IT IS NOT AN UPGRADE FOR THE GT3. The clamping strength of the "RS" pressure plate is a LOT less than the GT3 pressure plate. You can cross-reference the clamping force with the SACHS using their part number but you are better off just staying with your existing PP and only swapping the clutch disc (and the associated parts) for a spring centered version. The non-motorsports 996 GT3RS uses the same PP as the regular GT3.

Here is the Porsche part number application list for 911 based pressure plates.

964-116-027-90 968 (green)
959-116-023-05 959
964-116-028-03 993 (no mark)
964-116-028-53 993TT & 964 3.6T (red) & GT3 mk2
964-116-028-91 964 3.3T
964-116-028-90 964RS & 964(blue)
996-116-027-51 996 GT3 mk1 & 996TT
996-116-027-02 996
996-116-027-05 996 (M96.03)
997-116-027-12 997 (M97.01)
997-116-027-00 997 (M96.05)

I would buy from Gert or if the exchange rate and custom fees are less than favorable I would buy from Sunset Imports (they are the cheapest and the parts are OE.)

Austin does NOT work @ DEVEK anymore.

I would look up ViperBob and order the parts from him. He used to be the Master Tech at DEVEK for all 993/996 cars including all the GT3's.

ViperBob hangs out on the baord all the time.

So, the pressure plate I have on my car is the same as on the RS verison??

If so, is there any good reason to spend the extra money on a new one?

Yes the RS has the same pressure plate as the regular GT3 (part #996-116-027-51).

Nope, there is no reason to spend money on a new pressure plate.

Only if it goes. A friend of mine missed a shift.... zone 2 12,000rpm. The result was the bands on the plate let go. The shop is replacing it with the upgrade. The word from a couple of folks is that this is something Porsche has seen(ALMS-Challenge) over the last couple of years and came up with this new plate. So do not go from 5th to 2nd what you have will be fine.

the pin holding the pully on to the crank broke but that was it. A friend that builds cars said the folks from Motec see 14K+ often in GT3s that is why the new pressure plate.

The typical Pressure plate that is stock on a Supercup car and probably the Gt3 street version has two straps that locate the pressure ring to the aluminum housing, this centers the friction surface to the disc. One serious overrev and these deform and you loose the center for balance, also you will have a nasty vibration. If you are doing competion events use the 3.8 aircooled Pressure plate with 3 straps and it will provide a little safer margin of error. The Gt3rs and late supercup cars use a 5.5 alcon unit that is not sensitive to such things.

Regards
