When perspective 996 owners are considering ownership:
70% of the 996 owners (without a fix/solution) or IMS failure issues tells them that IMS failure is relatively not as big of an issue when considering 10% failure.
10% of the 996 owners with IMS failure tells them to be careful and usually their story of the money issues involved.
The other 20% that handled the problem with a preventive solution are laughing there a## off at both of them knowing that the 70% are standing in the same line the 10% were in, they just haven't been let into the club yet!
OK, I drew up this simple IMSB analysis decision tree a couple years ago, but we have enough newbies that I think it's worth reposting.
Simply start at upper right "Sage" = Jake, and follow the logical pathway to lower left "Increased Physical Durability." Note that most pathways also lead through the most-important "WTF" stage.
Now, if we take the output, and run it through a simple "before" and "after" IMSB replacement analysis, we can arrive at a significantly enhanced result:
Hi All. I'm a recent owner of a 2002 Carrera Cabrio, silver on blue. Car has only 36000 miles on and so far I love it. I have been lurking here for a month since I purchased the car and learned a lot about my car. For example, I now know about the IML failure and it's my plan to address this when I put the car away this winter. Not sure how yet but there's a fix that doesn't require engine removal and replaces the ball bearing shaft with a smooth bearing and an oil line for lubrication. Might go this route. I also replaced the factory radio with a Pioneer one that has Nav, Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and sounds great. I didn't put a sub since there is no really good place to put one. I also fixed the driver's window not dropping that 1/4" when opening the door thanks to this forum and I replaced the worn shifter **** with one from Renn, the satin finish ball one. Loving that too! I hope to be a contributing member though I typically post only from time to time. This is a really active forum so I will be watching.
