Are there some good detailed threads regarding a LS swap out there???

I learned that the DSP unit is slaved to the amp, not the head unit; even if you remove the factory radio, the factory amp needs the DSP unit connected to its cable to function properly.

Thankfully, the gutted DSP unit takes almost no room above the passenger footwell.

The one that pops to mind is by user white out and titled something like no imsb worries or something. He ended up selling the car to a guy who made our good friend 1999 whatever butthurt's car look like a leaf hit it. I did not know he died in it.

THere are some great LS build threads; there are not any great LS DIY threads. In addition to White Out's, There was another LS swap started here, but the guy left and went to another forum (Corvette forum, maybe, or LS1Tech) to finish - somebody pissed him off by correcting his "Porsche" pronunciation, so he bailed.

The guy who bought White Out's car died in it - the 996 left the highway and struck a tree. The reminders of what can happen in an instant are sobering.

Here's an in-progress thread of a 996 LSx swap @ LS1tech

Coool... I'll read it. LS swap is not my thing, but kind of fun to watch as a legal bystander. ha!

I think you guys all make valid points about the LSx swap. The tongue-in-cheek "sacrilege" quip was from witnessing the responses from a vocal minority when the guy was doing the swap and detailing it in this forum... prior to deleting his posts. Swaps are always easier on paper, but the good news is that it's not like reinventing the wheel. Between Renegade Hybrids for a hardware source and other individuals that have completed it and thankfully shared online their experiences doing it, it doesn't seem insurmountable. If my 996 ever experiences terminal vomiting in the engine compartment, it's the route that I plan on pursuing. I think a guy could get to ~500hp/tq and be (never) done for approx. 15k for the conversion. But having said that, I typically go over budget on fun projects. The low-end torque is what in my opinion makes the conversion more preferable to me over a warmed over 996 mill.

Holy smokes! Had to make helluva high-speed hit to crumble a car like that... so sad. My best friend was (stupid alert) *running* from police in a heavily modified Mustang GT and sailed through a three way and into a very large oak tree. He slammed the brakes and realized he was done, he laid down in the seat to embrace impact. He was cut out of the car and lived believe it or not. The trooper later told him, that he called it in as a fatality. That ended his high speed days.

^^^^ Yeah, I have seen plenty of pix of crashed 996's, but never one that mangled. Guess the LS really did give it a massive power boost.

Anyway, although the LS is a fantastic motor, and is available for a great price, something intangible bugs me about putting one in a 996. I know a guy with one in a 944... now that's a stokin' mod!

EDIT: Ooops... Forgot to number my post. Lost track. 17?

Holy **** Schnell. You got a background on the story? Was it just simple speeding and lost control?

Edit, googled it and found it:

Here is ...the driving video.

Torque is nice no doubt. But when the guy in the 700hp Bumblebee Camaro that you passed in the advance group comes up to you afterward to ask "what you've got in that thing", it's also nice to see the look on his face when you tell him 245rwhp flat 6.

Don't kid yourself there Slakker, that look is because he is still incredulous that they wouldn't put him in the fastest run group and you were holding him back.

Curious... HP aside, what does the V8 do to the 996 in terms of weight and balance?

Do have the exact numbers? Seems like the heavier V8 would pose some serious handling issues stickin' out the rear like that. (see pic ref)
