Theres no way in hell I'd pay 25k to fix that car. The dealer is looking for used parts as well to come up with an estimate. I'm going to start looking for private shops that work on Porsches and look around for the parts myself.

Man, it's so nice, all I want to do cruise around in my cab

Although the Internet says that nobody rebuilds/repairs transmissions any more, you may be able to find someone to do the work. When I blew up the transmission on my Volvo 850, I got the same "buy a new one or find a used one - nobody works on transmissions any more" stuff - and then I found a guy who stripped it down, replaced two or three parts, and put it back together for something like $400.

I know we're talking apples, not Volvos - but it still might be worth seeing if you have a local transmission whisperer.

When my motor 'sploded, the guys right here on RL helped in my search for a good used one. DTMiller found it for me. So, a great resource here.

Good advice, Schnelly... yes, maybe someone can do a rebuild.

Yikes! $25K? Crazy.

Check around for a used one. Maybe here:

It's from a C4, but I know a C4 can be converted to a C2.

Yeah, a used or rebuild transmission makes sense. The good news is it's not the engine.

Ouch. Definitely go used if they can't convince Porsche to replace it.

At $25k I'd think a 6mt swap would be more reasonable

Haha I'd love to swap in a 6spd.

So will a C4 transmission definitely work in my 2002 C2? What kind of modifications would need to be made?

Where are you located? I have a great transmission guru but he is located in NJ. Perhaps it may make sense to give him a call. Who knows, maybe pull it and ship it to him for a rebuild. Just a thought. If you want the number, pm me

They are checking on used parts as well. Anybody got a torque converter and tip transmission they are looking to sell?
Oh that's not good. Had my fingers crossed it was something less serious.

Not sure I read that right? $25K for a new Tip? My 2003 Turbo's 6-speed had I had to buy it when it was replaced under warranty was just $11K not including labor to drop the old one and install the new one.

The Porsche techs I talk to tell me the Tip is repairable. It is made by ZF and a number of other makes/models use nearly the same transmission and as a result there can be a shop or two in town that specializes in them. If a town has a Porsche dealer it should be big enough to support a ZF transmission shop.

The problem with your Tip though is the Tip is repairable. It may not be a good candidate for a repair but the person to ask is the head of the Tip transmission shop.

Since you are in NC (like me), here is my advice:

Call Rob at DC auto in Rocky Mount, NC......he has the biggest Porsche "junkyard" in the East Coast.....very nice guy to work with, if he does not have it, he probably can get it......he has so many 996's in there, that I would not be surprised if he has a transmission for your car.....by the way, last time I was there, he had several, and ranged in price from 2300 to 3500 dollars.........assume another 1000 for remove and replace.......

Here is the deal man, I may be your savior here.

I still have the spare MY 2002 tiptronic from the C2 Cab with 44k miles laying in my garage. I bought it as a spare for my car, it is in the picture that KCattorney loves to post so much. It is still shrink wrapped from the original seller.

$1,250 + you arrange shipping and it is yours. It is 356lb and was shipped to me on the pallet, so that will give you an idea how much to pay for shipping.

PM me if interested in this.
