MK1 vs. MK2 is a personal preference, not something I factor into the value proposition. The MK1 car was a lower mileage (31K) early build with cable throttle, dual-row IMS, and more durable interior component finish. It also had some nice factory goodies like M30 sport suspension, LSD, white guages, stainless steel exhasut tips & door sill plates, etc. IMHO this car was the better value dollar for dollar.

2002 Porsche 911 C4S - $36,500 - Seems like it could be a good deal.

I think the price favor in the .2 cars are because they are newer and better cared for as Porsche realized problems and resale values sank
as prices climbed in each 911 selling year people probably held on to their cars longer
but I believe the uniqueness of the very early 996 will continue to climb especially if you have factory extras (LSD or Aero PTS)

The market definitely values the difference between .1 and .2 though, with .2s usually selling for a decent premium over .1s. Between many preferring the looks and the obvious benefits of the 3.6L, 20HP is kind of a lot, the .2s simply have a wider appeal and will likely always command this premium. Many don't seem to really place a lot of value on the early car options and to some extent its warranted. Unless you are looking to have an all original show car the suspension is 20 years old and likely needs replacing at which point any 996 can become a M030 for little investment above stock replacement. And my understanding is the factory LSD wasn't super great and usually isn't functioning properly after 20+ years at which point you mind as well upgrade to Guard, because it is better and doesn't cost much more than rebuilding the factory unit. That being said I was happy to get an LSD car and I haven't pushed my car very hard, but it seems to function properly.

We are all have our own opinions and preferences regarding the .1 vs .2 differences, I personally prefer the looks and build quality of the early .1 cars. The headlights on the .2 cars don't look symetrical to me, I feel they ruin the sveltness of the body. Also, a 20HP gain in a heavier chassis does not amont to a lot (.2 of a second difference 0-60). I also find the .1 cars more enjoyable to toss around in the twisties. At a mere 31K miles on the .1 car, I would expect decent life left in the suspension components and the LSD to still be functional. Overall, I still feel the best "bang for buck" was in the .1 car for the same price, but as I stated previously, this is IMHO.

I agree the early cars definitely have value to some, like you and I and many others on this board, but it seems to be a fairly niche want and doesn't seem to be a significant value booster as of yet, but they are certainly rarer and have some cool features and options that will become increasingly appreciated as these cars age, just like all the classics before them. For sure the Aero kit is a huge value booster and has been for some time and definitely seems to be more common on the .1s and early cars. PTS has also been very hit or miss with some boasting stupid premiums and others being nearly unsellable.
