I wouldn’t argue with any of that. If you like it, make an offer contingent upon a thorough (real thorough... including bore scoring check/compression check - this will cost $). I went to “just look” and the car was super clean (mine is high mileage tho), had service history including LN IMSB, and I threw out a number much lower than asking just to test the waters, and the dealer stuck out his hand. Then I had to explain to my wife what happened to “just looking. LOL

It all comes down to what these cars are worth to YOU. And these 15+ year old machines are still amazing! I never thought I’d own a Porsche 911. Now every time I’m even in the garage I smile.

I agree with all of this. My purchase over the summer...'02 C2 Cab Tip was at a P dealer with all records and everything I wanted. The price was fair in my opinion ($20K), but I made it contingent on many service items being taken car of. They ended up agreeing to everything and replacing some things I did not ask for. About $4k in service was done, the price was the same. They want to move these cars, but the nicer ones will have a higher price.

If you are of the opinion that the $3700 worth of work represents a markup on sale of $3700, that would be supremely optimistic. From what I've seen, LN bearing, clutch, RMS seal job in the market means $600-1000 bump in value, all other things being equal.

I would definitely do a full PPI before buying by an independent Porsche shop, and will try to negotiate on the price. Based on what I've seen, $23 - $24K wouldn't be unreasonable for a good example without the IMS, Clutch, and 60K service just having been done. I'm not sure how much that should add to the price, but not the full value of paying to get those done. Do any of you have opinions on what to add for that (thanks docmirror for your estimate of 600 - 1000).

Whenever I see discussions here of pricing, there are always lots of people who suggest thousands less than what I see for list pricing and I'm not sure how successful people are in negotiating down that much, especially for a clean car with all major service up to date. I guess there's no harm in just offering something a lot lower than asking price......

feel free to read the rest of my post for my thoughts on value.

also, many times having this work done is the difference between actually moving the car and it not selling.

Unless it failed my Durametric tests and AOS/Manometer test, I'd be interested.

I'm having PTSD. This was every prospective buyer (verbatim) when I tried to sell mine earlier this year.

Unusual things (but of course a very high asking price):
  • mileage: 15,920 (geez, I've done pretty close to that in 1.5 years of ownership).
  • sunroof delete
  • not only heated seats, but also cooled?
  • Porsche crests on seats
  • painted console
  • no mention of IMS service, but lots of other important service completed.
So..... assuming somebody negotiates this down to $40K, is this now the new reality in excellent condition C4S?

I'd say no. Just the reality for a C4S with incredibly low mileage.

This may sound like a great deal on a Porsche given it's a one-owner, low miles car; but, nothing could be further from the truth. M96 "garage queens" are some of the worst offenders of bearing failure. It boils down to... what you're asking and what you're getting are two entirely separate things. Realistically, this is more like a $35K car.
