Yea....I would say that was very, very top dollar. I paid $22K almost 3 years ago for my 99 with aero package with 31K miles. It's in very nice shape, but the front end is sand blasted from spending its life in Reno, NV.

Maybe because of the high mileage. But that cab is being sold by one of Jake Raby's partners... that is, works with F6I to make the repairs to these cars before he puts them on the market.

That silver cab is a solid car...

To clarify, Stonegate Auto Sales is one of our customers... Just like any other customer. They seek out great cars with broken hearts, and we resuscitate them.

Steering wheel, heck, did you notice the salvage title?

Definitely not worth $17K with a salvage title. Prolly more like $12,000. Having the accident pictures or posting the VIN would be a start for this seller. Hopefully, it won't be another cover up or one of those... "It's the best Porsche in the state of _____". ha!

For reference... read back...

I asked for the story and records about the salvage title. He said all that's available is what you can find through CarFax/AutoCheck. Not off to a good start.

I noticed the salvage title immediately... I offered him $11k, he said he's not willing to take less than $16k. I told him good luck . He's a real estate agent, probably thinks he can sell water to a fish.

After I noticed the steering wheel I'm not sure I'm comfortable even at $11k. It speaks to the level of maintenance (or lack thereof). If it ever goes anywhere, I'm half expecting this to be the sort of seller who doesn't understand why I'd need a PPI.

Usually a big red flag for me is when the seller is vague, tries to cover up the true damage, or puts off information on another source like in your case. Usually, the seller knows the history better than anyone, but is fearful to be transparent about it because of the risk of hurting the sell. The CarFax will NOT give you a clear account of the accident. However, you can contact CarFax and they'll give you the police report case # and then you'll need to call the actual Police Dept that handled the wreck. They can give you a more detail summary of the accident and in some cases provide photos. Another problem with this ad is the seller didn't post the VIN number. People will say that it's to protect their privacy, but it's really to prevent people from searching salvage sites like CarPart. If you had the VIN, it would be interesting what would show up on a simple google search.

The car is not stock and has obvious cosmetic flaws; plus, it's a high mileage salvage vehicle. This car will not bring more than $15,000 IMO. I would move on and not look back.

If the seller refuses a PPI in a salvage case like this car... run, don't walk from the deal.

Pretty nice deal ($250) on a black/black hard top, if any of you Upstate NY/New England cab owners are looking for one:

http://westernmass.craigslist.org/pts/6173676853.html

Ad states that it has some scratches, but at this price it might be worth a look.

In my experience this never happens, police departments protect these records like they're HIPPA information. It's actually quite frustrating because this information is freely available to insurance companies and is, in theory, supposed to be a part of the public record.

Already done. He hasn't refused to offer a PPI, but unless he comes down a lot further on the price, any further communication is wasted. I'll keep waiting for a reasonably priced, higher mileage black 911. I should have bought the 185k one I looked at earlier this year (for $11k)... but I didn't and you live you learn. I'm sure another opportunity will come up soon enough.

Also: Kudos on properly formatting a response with a segmented quote!
