Starting to look at cars in the Minneapolis area. Here are two on CL that look interesting. I'm pretty new to this and curious what the forum thinks.

2002 porsche 911 carrera 2 - $21500

Depends in part on what you want ... I'm partial to the early cars, and at first glance that '99 looks legit. IMSB replacement on a '99 isn't necessarily a good thing, so you'll want to know when it was done and what kit was used.

The track history wouldn't scare me too much. These cars were meant to be driven, and an owner who readily discloses that the car was tracked is probably on the up and up. I'd be more concerned about the guy who takes out the roll bar and harness and tells you he only drove it to church on Sunday.

Other that that, it's all about the service history and how it was maintained. IMO, it's a fair price for a decently maintained car with fairly low miles.

I contacted the seller to see about service records, VIN, IMS questions, and getting a PPI.

Low mileage. Every time I see one of these speed yellow 996 I have to gawk.

That would be a nice buy if it checks out.

Edit well, a quick search of the vin reveals a possible salvage auction. That would explain a lot.

Here's a $13k 1999 high miler near me with a clean title. I may do a drive-by tomorrow.
Only the brave need apply.

CL shows salvage title. Could be something as simple as a hail damage, or two cars welded together. Never know.

Wow... a '99 w/aero kit, nice rims, nice paint and only 97k miles, FOR UNDER $14K! Oh' it's a tip! Assuming the engine runs and has not suffered failed IMSB, at this price it would be worth it to buy the car, keep all the upgraded parts, put it to bone stock, and then sell the car for $14k.

Free aero kit and rim upgrade. Jus' sayin'....

Personally, I am partial to the 2002. I used to own one; it was a fantastic car for me and still is for the new owner. I like the new, more powerful, engine in the 2002 996.2; I also like the new front end design without the "runny egg" headlamps.
