OK, this looks promising - a 2001 cabriolet, seal gray, high miles and a little maintenance needed but still waiting on an opening bid of $9,500. Is this anyone here's car? Appears to be knowledgeable seller, although not sure I agree with the comment about problems with the MY 1999 & 2000 cars. Sounds like it needs an AOS.
If his reserve is that $9,500 starting bid, that would be a great deal. Given the penchant for new owners to drop a bunch of money on just purchased cars to replace a bunch of stuff that's not broken, an AOS shouldn't be a big deal - if you drop the engine to do the standard IMSB swap, the AOS is a WYAIT part anyway. A PPI would tell you a lot and I wouldn't even think about it without a PPI.

Looks like a really nice coupe at a fair price. Replaced RMS IMS and crankshaft bolts 2k miles ago. No affiliation just a local car to me and would be more than willing to go check it out, and facilitate a PPI at Reno Rennsport (the only shop I have do major work on my 996). Just let me know!

Here is what seems like a great deal. Ad is a little vague in terms of work done but a sub 90k mile MK2 askin $18,500?!? Bargain.

Feels good viewing this thread since it gives me reassurance to my decision to purchase one. Less than 4 months ago I was a Porsche noob not knowing anything about 996s other than they were afforded under 20k.
I bought mine 2 weeks into my search. A 2000 Porsche 996 clean title 80k 6speed coupe needed some TLC but it was the color I wanted, aero kit equipped, and came with minor mods that help spirit the passion for these cars all for $13.5...
I bought it with out every hearing of IMS and PPI.
Just did some fluid checks, a quick test drive, and an overall expection and I was sold.
Fast forward to today although I'm almost at the purchase price alone in modifications I won't ever look back or plan to sell.
I now know why my uncle told me several years ago when I inquired about his passion and love for Porsches he told me with a smile "once you go Porsche you never go back."
Funny thing is if I had known about this website and the "horror stories" threads I would have probably never owned one in my lifetime and bought a NSX.
Some food for thought

Not the deal of the century but seems fairly reasonable compared to what I'm seeing on CL, Ebay, and Autotrader lately:

Oooh. Chico isn't too far away. I may have to add this one to my list of prospects!
Just over the upper end of my range, but it may be worth the stretch if I get some more $ together and it's still around.
