This IMS failure potential has been the most discourging aspect of looking in getting into the 996 scene, it's a damn if you do, damn if you don't situation.

That said, in just the last month I've seen two 996s with high mileage on them (80K miles and 110K miles), neither of the owners even knew of the IMS issue and the cars are still on the original IMS bearing!

OMG, how is this possible???

I have never heard of a high mileage 996 on its original detonation device that has not blown up yet.

Perhaps it has to do with the clueless owners, maybe some wierd version of "ignorance is bliss".

I have 167.000Km on my 996 Carrera 2 year 2000 with Original IMS bearing on it.

I do regular service since new every 5000 Km with no excuses.

The car runs just perfect!!!

Here in Kuwait nobody know about IMS! nobody! Not official, not non-offical. Porsche official maintenance is requested every 5000KMs, thats all.

Regards

This is consistent with what I have observed. In my experience many 996 owners buy on impulse. Most I have encountered were delighted when they discovered that the car they bought has a M96/0*AT*** reman engine. I guess they don't know these engines are typically not eligible for the LN Eng retrofit. I suggest they keep $18,000 in an envelope in their sock drawer for a "rainy day".

Please explain the aspect that the "reman" engines are not "eligible" for LN bearing upgrade? And how does one tell if an engine is a reman'ed engine?

I think he means that if the new motor is a 2005+, then there's a chance the bearing can't be pulled with splitting the case.
