Have the cam deviations checked..

Hello All, recently purchased a 15k mile 996 with original IMS. I plan to get the IMS swapped ASAP. any suggestions on which one to go with? I've been doing research, but still very new. I'm actually picking up the car this weekend and plan to drive it about 400 miles home. I hope I'm not making a huge mistake doing this! Also, does anyone know a recommended mechanic to work on 996's in the St. Louis, MO area?

thanks!

I spent a good two weeks reading all I could find on the subject. I suggest you google the topic and get busy before asking about IMSB, the topic has been beating to death and all the information you need is out there, you just need to search!
Best of luck with your new 996, they are great cars when maintained properly...

Unfortunately 99.75% of that is all hearsay, or comes from people with zero direct experience.

When someone tells me "I am going to research my options" I just laugh.. They consider Google research, not knowing that most of what they read is being written by people who know less than they do!

No information is better than misinformation, and crap posted by "forumites" that have zero direct experience. This "research" is killing these cars, and engines.

Yup, and once I was thoroughly confused with conflicting information I came here and found you (someone I was familiar with from my early aircooled VW days) and got re-edjumacated…

Thank you for all your help it's truly appreciated!

I did a lot of research too. Mine was a 45000 mile car. I ended up having the Solution installed.

Why?

Whatever IMS replacement you do, labour costs are about the same. The difference is the part price. The Solution is expensive. $1000 more? $1500 more? I suggest that if you keep the car forever, you never have to change it so you save money. If you sell the car, I think you can expect to get back the cost differential of the Solution versus any other IMS bearing option including some of the LN options.

My bearing appeared perfect when removed.

Every penny was worth it when I was on a backroad, wife caught me at 180 km/h. 5 minutes later, a firetruck pulled over to let me by. Expensive? yes. WORTH EVERY PENNY.

appreciate the info! Im kind of leaning towards the solution . Its roughly around $1000 more for the shops around me. Seems like it may be worth spending a little more money

I HIGHLY recommend you get a certified installer if possible! Get the car precertified. Mine was done several hundred miles away. The installer took his time showing and explaining everything to me. Did the water pump and a few other small things. I do all the other work myself for the past 1.5 years and 17000 miles! Daily driver

Hello all,
I am planning to replace my bearing soon, the car is 2000 c2, the previous owner replaced the original engine due to the bearing failure, he said the current engine was pulled out of a 99 c2.
anyway I am going to remove the transmission in the next couple days to identify the flange type, but I was wondering can the engine model year be verified from the serial number? this is a crucial part in my opinion when picking parts related to the engine (correct me if i am wrong) instead of ordering 2000 parts in case of any variations.

Regards.

Greetings all,
I'm planning to replace my IMSB and RMS and would appreciate the loan of tools for the job. Specifically the tool to remove the IMSB and the cam locks. Tool to set the RMS would be nice as well but beggars cant be choosers. I have an 02 C2 Cab which IIRC is a 3 chain. I live in the Balt/Washington D.C. area. I will pick up. I appreciate any assistance. PM me if you can help. Thanks, PJ

If you buy the IMS products from LN Engineering directly, they offer tool rental.
