Impressions : ~ 1000 miles of air

Steve asked,

So first off the air cooled smells much differant. A little more like an old "bug" with that oil smell, but not enough to be horrible, but it is there for sure. The car...the trunk is small! spare tire deflated, so you have to have a pump. tool kit is very big and has some spare parts, front carpet kit is like some afterthought. Inside The key hole is tough to find in the dark, more door storage area, but things get lost in the corners, no foot reat for left foot (though they can be added and I plan on doing so, it is very much missed part!) the pedals rotate off the floor, it takes some getting used to. Seats are about the same as stock 996 (in fack i think they are the same)
when it starts, there is NO chain noise, it just starts right up solid (sorry for the "solid" plug) the clutch is super nice - the 996 clutch was way too easy and hard to feel the engagement point where as the old car is so easy to feel where it is at. Mine is a 915 tranny, the next year they started the G50... the 915 is a little tough to get used to, you have to shift MUCH slower and rpm match is a big plus for smoothness, i double clutch almost every shift, but I have done that most of my life so its not an issue... I actually didnt do it in the 996, but sometimes still didn out of habit.
seating position is good, easy to see out the windows and all
sunroof is small but I dont use it much, no pop up... just the slider, I liked the pop up! Steering a stiffer and require more imput and muscle. It wore me out more than once but I am getting used to that now.
The IMS fear is gone, but new fears have replaced that... I worry about electrical issues and valve adjustments.
The car is harder to get in the air as there is an AC line right on the body jack point, I dont like that and have had no luck working around it.
power is wierd as I find myself driving quite fast and not knowing it... seems to start kind of slow and "grandpa like" then I look down and I am pushing 90! It really rolls nice. There is way more air noise in the front, windows dont have "auto up/down" MISS! HVAC controls ? there must be 12 of them and I have yet to figure those out! The hearer and AC work EXCELLENT though I often dont know how I got them to work.
Driver involement is high, its tough to disengage yourself and just cruise, though that makes it kind of fun too.
RATTLES - boy, those are plentiful, I have been chasing those down...getting better but I never had that in the 996. My speedo made a wierd noise one day too... scared the sheeat out of me?
I have yet to lock up the brakes but braking hard stops the car very well...my shocks are toast so I wont comment on turn in, but its not slow! The 996 was definently FAST, shifting, turning, braking.

lets see....
the exhaust is a little like a subaru IMO and needs something more... there is no PSE Hack, so I might have to actually spend money
the 996 felt more safe... I know that seams wierd, but with the longer nose, taller sides, airbags, ABS ect it just did feel very confident in traffic. The 86 is ver agile and slips in and out of traffic nice. It doesnt like stop and go as much though...
FEAR - well that black paint was a constant fear issue, rock chips, door dings, finger, washing ect... the new car is more like... take the dogs? SURE! that is a nice thing. I dont think the paint is as pretty, but I am working on it.
Did I mention there is NO room behind the rear seats ... like NONE!

and finally, the 996 was a sexy woman, I often whispered to her and thanked her every ride. I told her what a great job she did. The 86 might be a man,..... I dont talk to it that way....I have yet to have that "connection" and have more of a "Buddy" relationship so far

All in all the 996 is such a great car, I miss it in many ways and am thankful I had it. I might get it back (or another) someday - but the 86' is really fun in many ways too. I feel a little more like a kid/youth and less like a "successful adult" Its a great thing to have the chance to have both and I am not upset in any way about my choice to change.

Cheers and thanks for reading this jibberish

I always liked that oil smell in the aircolled cars.
And Ed, HVAC on an 86 is nothing more than a myth
Heat is always decent though.

I'm fine with this as long as you don't come out of the closet. You kiss this car goodnight and you are on ignore!

That's quite a synopsis Ed...I'll bet it has a Porsche fragrance like my 911SC, that the defroster is just about working, the steering is telepathic, the engine sound is intoxicating, the car isn't quick but it is fast,
and the handling is unique to PORSCHE 911s yet somewhat different than a newer one. All in all, they all belong to the same family of dedicated sports cars that are constantly evolving and changing.
