SAI & valve guide issues may have affected the 993's values, even though being the last air-cooled model outweighs that;
Broken head stud issues may have affected the 911/911SC's values;
Engine reliability (& rust) issues have definitely affected the 1974-77 911's values;

In short, it's just more of the same. Just on a more serious scale.
+1. Seems that many previous 911s had issues during its evolution. Good point.

My problem is that I was hoping to take advantage of the financial crisis and the folks that are as a result upside down in their 996/boxsters.

But - these cars have IMS issues.

Dammit- even the vultures can't win.

I think he meant $17,000 for the car and $2,300 for the IMS bearing. So less than $20,000 for the car.

well guys, i got the car back today from the shop and its running superb!! this guy did an amazing job!!
the only light damage found was 1 oil pump which we changed, otherwise, everything else looked great!
since we were there, i had him replace the water pump and the head gasket as it showed a potential leak down the road.. i had a new clutch and rms so, i didnt have to anything there..
here is the twist!! it turns out my car has an updated engine !!whaaaaaaaaaat!! yes, according to the shop , my engine is an 05 engine which had all 997 parts including apparently the updated head design as we had to replace the head gasket !! i have no previous records of this, so i ended up doing some due diligence to find out it was done under warranty by the original owner when the car had 33k miles, in 06, which means my UPDATED ENGINE had only 30k miles more or less when the IMS failed!! i cant believe porsche didnt even mention that when i filed the claim, they just sat on it !!
anyway, i highly recommend these guys, they are enthusiasts and do very very clean work.
and that was my IMS experience
hope it helps

so did you end up replacing the engine or was the engine rebuilt? i always thought if the ims went out the easiest way was to replace.... so what was the final cost for the repairs?

I don't know how much beefier the IMS was in 06 but I believe it was still a sealed bearing which was the bigger issue.

Oh no! Inclement Mush & Snow (IMS) failure

IMS failure = Interstate Motorist Shooter (cops with laser and radar guns). They confiscate for 30 over or 100mph here. Fail this one and you are really hurting.

IMS failure = In My Storage for winter

IMS failure = I Motor Slowly
