These failures seem pretty random.
...which, frankly, is not consistent with failure due to "a poor design". A "poor design" might experience some variation in mileage-at-failure, but it would almost certainly correlate to some other variable, such as maintenance or degree of use. A "poor design" would fail sooner with suboptimal maintenance and/or hard-duty usage. I won't dispute that a sealed bearing in this application is a curious if not bizarre choice, and certainly there's no doubt they fail. But that randomness is more suggestive that either the tolerances of the bearings or the final assembly tolerances--or both--are all over the place.

Someone called "Hartech" in the UK on another forum said that the bearings fit very tightly, more so the more the attaching nut is torqued down. He hypothesized that some of them may be running hotter and fatiguing sooner than others. That's the most plausible explanation I've read thus far, in light of the fact these failures seem to not correlate consistently to any other variable.

i am so pissed!! its an 02 C4s, 66k miles, all maintenance up to date... i dont why this would happen!! i feel like to going down to the dealership and choke someone!
i have owned countless air cooled porsches with no problems, the 996 is a big disappointment although it was growing on me..
i am assuming this is an IMS failure and will require a new engine!
please advice
but now you can get the infamous LS corvette motor, whats the low down on that option, i've heard both sides, but i've heard that porsche enthusiast definitely frown on that, could anybody explain why, vette motors are cheaper, more hp, easier to work on, definitely easier to find a mechanic, parts are alot easier to find. i could go on, can someone tell me why to get another 996 motor, besides being the original motor.

In the Washington area I recommend SCAN Automotive, they are one of our partners there and have done the IMSR successfully.
Are you referring to the Scan Automotive in Vancouver BC? If so, is there a shop closer in the states ?

Thanks, Evan

So, there was an IMS failure - engine didn't need to be replaced. I'm going to consider this 996 IMS Myth Busted #3.

993 owners, they're trying to keep their prices artificially high.
