It's official, my engine is BLOWN.

Is a 997 engine an option? Can you shoehorn it in? I've seen a Boxster with a 997S engine (I drove it - I'm not real big on Boxsters, but THIS one was fun on a scale of getting naked with Michelle Pfieffer).

Ben & cdodkin,
I have to say that I read Bruces reply totally different from you guys. When he said "over the financial loss in a feww weeks", I didn't read that as "I make so much money that I'll pay it off in a few weeks", but as "I've got my car back with a great new engine, and $12k sucks, but driving my 996 makes me forget about it" kind of thing.
As far as:
" a $12K expenditure is a $12K expenditure that gets your car back to where it was already before the blow-up." Not true unless you are under a 2 year engine warranty, with Zero miles on your engine & auxilliaries...in which case the engine would have been free. That's like saying "damn these tires, they wore out and now I have to spend $1400 to get right back where I was"...not true. The engines ARE heavily subsidized, just by the price. DO you honestly believe that everything Porsche is so wildly overpriced EXCEPT the engine? Everyone agrees a blown engine SUCKS and no one wants topay for one. BUT, if you bought your used car recently, didn't you wonder WHY the prices are SO low for such a young used car? Yes, you (and I) already got the huge depreciation "discount", becuase there is a small chance the engine may detonate.
What makes more sense... pay $38k for a 65k mile 993, that you KNOW absolutely will need at least $6k of top end rework in 30 k miles, or pay $34k for a 2002 with 40k miles (or $26k for a 99 with 60k miles) and take a 90% chance that it will be fine? No brainer in my IMHO, but the 993 buyers are doing that and worse, and not only not complaining about it, but happy that they JUST GOT a 993!!
I LOVE 993's, but that is just plain crazy!
"a $12K expenditure is a lot of food on the table. you know this. It's a nice family vacation. It's a lot of diff things to a lot of diff people so to write off a $10G+ expenditure on a toy item as a part of playing the game when there are other toys that don't have an IMS/cracked cylinder/etc threat... comes off as pretty elitist bud."
That's not elitist at all...it is what it is. If the 996 had a bullet proof engine, MOST of us wouldn't be here on this MB (well, here, and actually OWNING a 996), because we could not justify the cost of owning one!!! What is the percentage of MB posters that bought their 996 new? 10%? I'm just guessing, but it's not huge. I hate it that they do this, and I DO worry about it (not enough to keep me off of redline, tho ;-) ), but I recogonize that it is BECAUSE they do this that I chose, and was able to buy one. I'll take the chance. I'd rather NOT spend $50 or $60k for a TT, (heck, for that money I'd get a 997 C2S), and if mine blows up, I'll rant like everyone else, butthenI'll have spent $44k for a car with a new engine and a 2 year warranty.....how is that bad? If you went into the 996 purchase assuming you could get a supercar class car for that kind of change ($25k to $35k), then I feel bad for you, because you didn't do your homework.
I'm of course not downplaying the OP feelings or tring to make small of $12k..etc, etc, etc...

And, Ben, don't leap to stupid conclusions about how much money I have or make. I implied nothing about either of those things.
Honestly, I agree with the comment about how cheap a replacement motor is, and I agree that 3 large for a warranty is silly when you only really fear one thing and that one thing is only going to cost you 12. I think a lot of people have these cars who really shouldn't, either because they're in over their heads financially, or they don't have the philosophical orientation to drive a car that's more involving than a toaster. I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, here, and I'm not referring to this OP or anyone else in particular, but that's how I really feel.
If my engine goes, I will be irritated at the unplanned expenditure. But I'll get over the financial blow in a few weeks, and I will remind myself that I bought a Porsche

c'mon bruce c'mon don't play all innocent here. u and i agree on a lot of things and you're whining about something that people choose to post because it is a legitimate issue and concern and story to share with other 911 owners.
there is absolutely nothing wrong with people posting about engine failures. in fact, it's SO right because it is true and real.

I understand the frustrations and yes, lately there has been a flood of blown engine talk.
****, just jury alone has caused some loss of hair.
The bottom line is feeling for anyone unfortunate enough to experience a blown motor regardless how much it hurts financially to the individual.
Goiing through it would suck ***, that's a given.
With that said I am sure glad me and BruceP are tight. Hell, we go waaaay back.
For him to buy me a new engine would be like me buying him a beer.
Hopefully I won't have to PM him anytime soon

I promise you, I guarantee you, on all I hold sacred, that nothing I said gives you a clue about how much money I make. That would be tacky.

I am really embarrassed for the people in this discussion that are getting all shirty about how much money they make or think anybody else makes. So desperately, desperately insecure. Not to mention vaguely socialist. Sad...

this is a absolute excuse machine for porsche and the M96. bro an engine replacement that costs $12K say on a $50K 996 is nearly a quarter of the value of the car.... these engines are going not at 200K, not at even 100K, but at 13K, at 60K. that's absolutely unacceptable and silly to concede as some sort cost of doing biz with the devil.
do you guys get it? budgeting $12 thousand DOLLHAIRS for something that should reliably plug away like a work horse for a long, long time.
so we love the fact that the 911 is the everday sports cars, this implies it's a reliable daily driver. no way dude. not with our record with the M96.
the more i learn the more weary I am of owning this thing even with my reman longer than my warranty coverage... that then at 70K miles i'll have to think of renewing my warranty assuming they even warranty an '02 any longer or put aside $12Gs for a porsche rainy day which is a very very nice long week partying it up anyplace around the world for a lifetime full of memories with some hot **** chicks.
ridiculous. absolutely ridiculous. am i sweating? no. not at all. so far the fun and satisfaction of driving this car has made it all worth it. 15K miles and ticking. but am i uncomfortable with the whining i'm hearing about legitimate posts being made about engine failures by its owners? YES i certainly am.

Well, I have to say that I DO think that Porsche should do what BMW did for the S54 M Roadster engines. Up the engine warranty to 100k miles.
And I'm not making excuses for Porsche, I don't agree with the way they are handling this at all.
I don't think anyone does.
What I think makes everyone so angry, (besides the possiblity of 12 large), is that while we liked getting the cars at a good price, we HATE the fact that it may happen to us, and by warning everyone that the engines might do this, would drive their value down even further. It's a Catch-22, and by definition, you're sort of screwed.
