Default Fuel injector replacement question

hello everyone,
got a 2001 3.4L and car has been giving me a miss fire on cyl 5 when reaching the redline on hard pulls. works fine for the first few gear shifts but eventually will start missing and wont stop untill the revs drop or i restart the engine.
under normal driving car gives me zero problems and never misses. problem only happens on hard pulls.

my guess is the injector for cyl 5 might be clogged or on the way out. ill be checking fuel pressure and already ordered a new fuel filter just to see if that fixes it but if not i may need to get a new injector.

so my question is if anyone knows if the slimmer injectors you find online will fit? my car is a 2001 but has the older really "fat" injectors on the rails. not sure if you can replace the fat injectors with the newer skinny ones and was wondering if anyone knew if there would be a fitment problem if a buy a new skinny one instead of a new fat injector since they are harder to find.

thanks in advance!

Have you ruled out cracked or malfunctioning coil packs? or plugs?

when the problem first started i swapped out all 6 plugs and coil packs with OE stuff. problem still persisted.

i haven't had a chance to check for any leaks or cracks yet but will do it today once im back home from work.

really just wanted to know if the injectors will fit incase i need to buy new ones.
had an injector problem back when i first got the car and it was near impossible for me to find the "fat" injectors because no one had them available.
ended up replacing the injector with a used one a local shop had laying around.
with the luck i have for all i know that used on is the one thats bad now :P
it lasted 6 years though so not bad lol

Run a bottle of Techron or SeaFoam fuel treatment in a tank of gas before you do anything.

Specs are different between the Mk1 (fat) and Mk2 (skinny) injectors, so you want to run all of the same. Also the Mk2 injectors need to be modified to fit with the retaining clips. Looks like LN currently has sets of both in stock:

thats what i was afraid of.

and do you mean the retaining clips that hold them to the fuel rail? if thats all that needs to change i can prob get all 6 of the MK2 injectors and buy the clips. their quite cheap online.
and if the MK2 flow specs are slightly higher than the MK1 i can prob use them to match the performance upgrades of the car.

do you happen to know the flow specs of each one?

someone actually even gave a link showing where i might be able to get them for cheap as well.

it looks like the volvo injectors are the same as the porsche ones but wont require modification since the notch on it is already a bit higher. and at around $20 an injector on the volvo ones i might as well buy all 6 and give it a try to see if they fit.
if they fit ill confirm and let you guys know!

I wouldn't try remanufactured Volvo injectors.
Remanufactured means cleaned and new external o-rings. But the inside seals can't be replaced.
I would rather modify new 996.2 injectors to fit a 996.1 than install a used injector.
You can buy new 996.2 Bosch injectors for less than Injector Planet charged for "remanufactured."

I've been stocking up on parts that I might need for the life of my 996.2.
I gladly spent $200 for a set of new 996.2 Bosch injectors.
I understand saving money, but this is a critical part and deserves to be a quality part.
Like water pumps and coolant reservoirs, this needs to be a brand new OEM part.

Why do the Mk2 injectors have to be modified? There not plug and play?

Yes they do. You have to etch/cut a slight groove in each one so that the retention clip will properly fit. It’s fairly easy to do with a Dremel or similar.
