996 Off Topic Thread
#106
So I got one sort of off topic. How do you guys keep from constantly wanting to buy and sell cars? I like my cars and am blessed to be a position to own them. Currently, have a R53 Mini, 99 911 and 2021 Tacoma. I like them all but part of me wants to also sell them all for new things, it drives me nuts.
When I was in college one year I went through so many vehicles the stage sent me a letter asking if I was a dealer.
It's tough not to scroll Craigslist or Facebook marketplace and want to buy something.

That's why we pick projects to enhance the car over time. Great thing about the 996/911 is they get better with age, and there is always something you can do to make it better, faster and stronger. Plus, once you get it out on the track, you realize how special the 996 actually is.

I'm great at buying but terrible at selling. I currently have five cars (see sig) and a take-home company car. When I lived at the beach this would have been impossible but now that I'm further inland, I've become a hoarder.
I guess I get emotionally attached, maybe because I do 99% of my own work on them. Who knows? When I retire, I just want one practical car and one or two fun cars. We'll see.

Garage space is one for me as well. I wouldn't mind taking apart my MINI to work on an engine rebuild to learn some more about that but then my 911 would be outside and who knows how long it would take me to complete that.

Here is an interesting interactive map: "Roadway Report is an interactive, zoomable map of U.S. road fatalities in the last few decades, with public record data for each incident. You can layer it with motor vehicles, pedestrians and bikes and narrow the frame to certain time periods. The map comes with a warning that the data is geographically incomplete—"four unmapped deaths for every death on the map," writes developer Ben Carneiro."

I'm in the process of replacing our long term GTI, due to inconsiderate fellow commuter, and am thinking about current products to protect the exterior. Dealers sell packages to supposedly add all kinds of protections, but I've always been a bit dubious about them.
What's the current state of the art for exterior protection on a new car? Painted metal, gloss plastics, glass, wheels...
I'm so far behind in understanding this. I'm still using Mequiar's Gold Class shampoo and Griot's Best of Show Carnauba wax. TIA for inputs. I understand there are many competing strategies and products and am not trying to start any arguments. Maybe a limit is that all my applications will be done by hand.
