Default IMS and Clutch installed

After 3 months of ownership and at 77,000 miles the clutch on my 2003 cab decided it was to go to the big automotive junkyard in the sky. I didn't shed a tear because I knew this was a signal to replace the IMS. I was too cheap to spring for the oil-fed IMS solution, so I went with the standard LN IMS retrofit. The mechanic saved what I think was the original IMS and frankly, it looks brand new. Is it possible, this wasn't the original? The car didn't come with any service records, so I have no idea...

It does look new! Just curious, what was the total on your bill? Bob

the total was...... $5400

while they were in there I had them do everything, as I said the car had no service history.

that price covered
clutch (OEM)
IMS (LN retrofit)
RMS
clutch slave cylinder
oil separator
6 coils (they were cracking)
6 plugs
crank seal
drive belt
air filter
a few other minor nuts, bolts, seals, etc...

I could have done a few of these jobs myself, but while they had it all part I told the shop to take care of everything. Pricey, but it was done at a high-end shop on long island so I had to pay the Porsche tax. At least now I have peace of mind and should only have to worry about basic maintenance moving forward.

That looks amazingly fresh.
I’ve always heard these are the 4 - 6% failure rate, maybe less with the double row.

Mine is original as well at 60k miles. I have all maintenance records since new. I’m planning for the LN permanent solution with my clutch change sometime in the near future.

Keep the original as a souvenir. Show friends at the next GTG that these cars are good!

Hopefully they did a full oil/filter change with all that

Bearings always look new on the outside. If you really want to see what it looks like, cut it in half and look at the races and ***** for damage.

Don't need to cut it, just check the play and if it turns smoothly. I've reversed engineered the design and it should (the small single row) last well north of a million miles if taken care of.

That sounds like an awful lot of B10 life for a ball bearing.
