However it is important that the House comes first. I have friend who drive high end cars that live with their parents or in crappy apt's. I always tell my friends - at our age girls are more impressed by a Sub-Zero fridge than a sportscar.

But I'm thinking of declaring our vet a dependent for tax purposes given current pet medical costs, so everybody has a financial drain somewhere.

What I really meant was that there is no room for family stuff in a 996, but there's easily enough room for my gf, me and any reasonable amount of luggage. Sorry, I wasn't being very clear before.

I ran across this thread and found it interesting. We've got a lot of new owners since then who might, just might, have something of value to share, especially considering the current economic conditions and the fact that a 996 can be had for $20k right now. This is a new demographic in a new climate dealing with a different set of expectations and attitudes from friends/family/etc.
P.S. In my defense, at least it wasn't an oil thread...

I'll play along then, as a new 996 owner...
I've driven a Cayenne to work every day for some time now. Sure it has a Porsche badge on the hood, but the majority of people who see it in Indiana have no idea what it is. It's just another SUV.
Next week, I'll be driving the 996 to the office, parking in the same spot where I have parked the Cayenne for years. I actually thought about parking out back, just to avoid controversy. I've heard people make comments before about the cars that others are driving, mostly BMWs, and even a Corvette. Comments like "I guess we're paying him too much...", etc. The individuals who make these comments see no problem in spending $50 K for a tricked out King Ranch F-250, or more than that for a ski boat.
After a little consideration, I decided not to worry about it. I bought the car and I'm proud of it, regardless of what a few uninformed individuals might think.
After I've been around for a while, maybe I'll start an oil thread...

I'm a bit guarded in some circles since apparently I'm "rich" and therefore unworthy in some circles but things usually get better when I make sure that everyone knows that I think it's a car above else (no doubt one of the coolest cars EVER but a car, nonetheless)
Now, what's this about an oil thread?

porsche envy is worse now than a year ago, that's for sure.
what i don't like is the envy itself. comments about who's getting paid what, etc. that's just dumb, imho. to me it's just an extension of our puritan heritage where everyone was in everyone else's business. one should not envy another person's outward appearance of success.
you want to know what i think when i see someone with a great car/house/boat, etc? i don't think that somehow they are less deserving of those things or they "earn too much" (whatever that means). i think, "what do i have to do to get those things?". those people just inspire me to work smarter/harder so i can be the inspiration for some other guy.
