I work for the government- everyone I work with knows exactly what I'm making, give or take a few $k. I just don't think they understand that my Porsche is costing me less than that giant SUV they just bought. Or maybe they do... In the last year, our parking lot has gained an Audi TT, Mercedes SLK, Lexus SC430 and a Lotus Elise. Surprisingly, I'm the only Porsche, though I know one guy who will very soon buy a Boxster S...

Engineer, as well. With the added benefit of being able to fix my cars myself ![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I definitely feel uncomfortable driving mine into work so I usually drive it on Fridays when half the company is flexing (not in the office) or the day before a holiday. Considering that there's only a few other Porsches in the parking lot that I am aware of -- a couple of Caymans, a couple of Boxsters, and one other 996 Cab -- I definitely feel that if other people in my dept see me in my C4S, it would generate attention, unwanted or otherwise. Especially considering that the guy that owns a Cayman S is 2-3 pay levels higher than me. I figure people will wonder if I'm getting paid too much, living beyond my means, or sell drugs on the side. The way I see it, everybody has vices -- mine just happen to be cars. I don't live extravagantly, I don't think I live beyond my means (I max out my 401k), I don't take expensive vacations, I don't have any dependents (yet), and my fiancee and I live together -- she makes nearly as much as I do so most of our living expenses are split.
One particular co-worker, he's definitely intelligent and good at what he does, but he's somewhat outspoken and bitter. He acts like a car guy that knows everything about cars, but I don't he's ever touched a wrench in his entire life. He paid out the wazoo for a new E46 M3 and again for taking it in to the dealer for everything (including tires!) so he's extremely bitter and anti-BMW; he gives me all sorts of crap whenever the topic of cars come up. He replaced the M3 with an Acura TSX and claims that it's better than his "overpriced" M3. Hey, don't blame BMW and say they're expensive to maintain if somebody steals your 19" wheels from the company parking lot and you have to buy new 19" wheels AND tires -- yes, somebody(s) actually stole his 19" wheels/tires from the company underground parking garage!
It's all about perception and ignorance breeds rumours. There are SUVs that cost more than my C4S, but the general population sees $100k when they see a Porsche. Hell, a guy got fired this week and everybody on that team is keeping a tight lip why -- a couple of break room rumours have already started for the reason why.
Outside the office, now that's a different story. I want to be seen pimping the C4S, but, hopefully, not by co-workers.![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

My old boss clearly did not approve of my Porsche.
My new boss seems to think it's great...I actually caught him using it as an example in an effort to motivate another employee.

Same project - we got these British guys... they're taking their proverbial morning tea and something's missing... I hear on the radio "We'd like to have our sugar back. Can we get our sugar back?!"
I respond, "What's sugarback???"
After a pregnant pause... In their most proper British accent, "Just bugger off, Rudy..."
I guess they needed their tea...
It was a long project, but fun...

Personally, I drive my P-911-T to work everyday. It was easy for me because, I started driving my "P" day one, and now people could care less when I drive up. I also believe people wouldn't care if I was driving something else, before driving my "P".
I believe once people get over the shock of you having a "P" (if they are shocked...) they will eventually accept it as a normal icon of your choice of transportation. It's their problem if not anyway. We are all put here with different taste in foods, drink, women, men, education, recreation, habits, addictions, intellects, motivations, ambitions and our modes of transpiration.
Drive what make you happy, and let haters hate.
P-FUNK.

This thread is funny. It's also nice to read that I'm not alone with some of the weird reactions I get from people when they see my car. I'm fairly young for the "average" 911 owner (29), and I've noticed I get an above-average amount of scowls and weird looks from people when they see me driving my car. I'm sure they assume it's daddy's money or something, but oh well. Most people who don't know a lot about cars are shocked when they hear that my C4S is 10 years old now. The average person also doesn't realize what an incredible value the 996 is right now. If only they knew that I paid as much for my 911 as they paid for their brand new Civic...

I don't know which is harder to take.... Poor folk lookin at you wondering how you can afford to drive a Porsche or rich folk lookin at you wondering how you can afford to drive a Porsche.
This must be a stereotype Porsche owner and I don't look like one!!!
Onething for sure, Idon't go collecting rents with my Porsche. I have a good ol poorboy Jeep for that.

I live in LA - no one notices...
I did let everyone who works for me know what I paid though - so I didn't get hit up for raises. My 'new' 2004 4S cab is my daily driver - replaced my 09 subaru at the end of the lease.

I love when old dead posts are resurrected from out of nowhere. ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I totally get it. My purchase wound up coinciding with a decent promotion at work and, as others have pointed out, most people have no idea that you can pick up an '04 C4S for about the same price as a new 3 series Bimmer.
While my purchase and promotion weren't related, I'm fairly certain most people assumed that my bump up within the company came with a big payout. Unfortunately, it didn't. I also know most people assumed it was new based on the comments I've heard from quite a few people.
Remember, most people aren't Porschephiles and a surprising amount of people can't tell the difference between a 993, 996 and a 997. The fact is most non-car people just don't pay attention. When you start pointing out things like the headlights and engines their eyes just glaze over and they say, "Whatever, it looks new to me..." Making a Porsche the 4th car in my garage also didn't aid the perception.
You can't control what people think. Besides, what they think (and the car you drive) doesn't change who you are. I'm still hanging on to what's left of my 30s. Let them think what they want.

In big D there are not that many haters. You don't go totally un-noticed like LA but somewhere in the middle.
