Default Oil in Intercooler: Advise Please

Hi Guys

This is my first Porsche. A 1996 TT ROW. I was doing some works and removed the Intercooler, placed in on the floor. During reinstallation found some oil in both end of the pipes.

1) what is the cause of this?

Might be related

1) boost pressure meter not working, but she boosts

2) confirmed with Indy, it's not genuine porsche oil filter. Will get this sorted out ASAP

3) no white smoke on startup

4) currently running Mobil1 5W-50

5) No major oil leak on the floor. Minor drips

Hope to get some advise from TT Gurus. Thanks in advance

Oil: 20W/50 or at the least 15w/50
Boost gauge: check all little vacuum hoses behind motor. I replaced bought new sensor only to find a couple of hoses weren't attached.
There may be a slight film inside, if it's at the point of dripping then it's a sign of trouble. May have been an over fill but you'd have smoke at start up. Overfill could damage turbos by cooking them.
Lots of threads to search for most of your answers.

It's normal to have a little bit of oil. It's from the turbo-chargers. You would find some on the throttle body as well.

"Normal" wear, should not be dripping. At the most it may be a film of oil residue. Dripping, puddling or running oil are sure signs of problems. May not be catastrophic, but it is an issue that needs to be addressed.

Unless your in the north pole I'd be running a heavier weight. Look at your owners manual and determine which oil fits your climate. Install the Porsche filters. Drop the engine oil level down to the first mark.

Read the sticky above..

Oil in the intake or oil on the garage floor gets asks once every 4 to 6 weeks.

I stick with my statement. Even a spoonful or two is nothing to be alarmed about. Turbo oil seals have a certain amount of blowby. As long as its not starting to cause misfire, you should not be overly concerned.

I've never quite understood this. I don't think you are referring to the gauge in the dash but the dip stick. If the dip stick I do not have a 'mark' on it. The stick goes from a round profile to a rectangle one that twists around at the end for 2 inches or so. I don't have my manual handy but I believe the correct level 'on the twist' is towards the middle or just under to avoid overfill problems.

For the sake of safety what are the signs of running too low of oil!? Thanks

Just seeking clarification in the name of knowledge!

There are indentations prior and ending of the twist. Put the oil level at or near the lower level of the twist.

You won't have any issue with running the oil at that level. You will have issues with filling the oil past the midlevel. Dry sump oil system. You have plenty of oil in the engine, oil tank and oil lines. I'd check the dipstick oil level at least once a month to gauge your oil level and consumption.

Thanks for the prompt response guys. Yup I've read the sticky, and went thru the threads. In fact that's what got me paranoid and scared! Lol

The oil I'm talking about is about a spoonful each side. If that is normal, then that's a relief.

I live in Malaysia. Temperature here is about 100F all year round. Mobil1 here comes only in 5W-50 for Fully Synthethic Blend. I will try to get my hand on 15W from international order, though the freight and tax would kill me.

I've only owned this baby for 3 months. Lots and lots of reading and research to do. Glad that I've got great guys in RL behind my back

Kevin thanks for the reply. I'm interested to purchase the 996T check valve kit. I will go through your website, or you can PM me cost with freight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

I will lookup the hoses and connectors at the boost sensor prior ordering new part. Thanks again guys.

If you always are in really hot temps, install a fan bypass switch for your front oil cooler so you can have the fan on high - the cooler these cars run, the better. Make sure you cool down the turbos before shutting them off by idling for a bit - that helps as well.

You should get the Mobil 20w-50 v-twin motorcycle oil in your car asap. People are running 20w in much cooler climates than that and the v-twin has more of the good additives ZDDP.

Motorcycle oil huh? That figures. Might be able to source it locally. Coz 20w-50 car oil is not available in Malaysia. Thanks PiB993

The data sheets indicate this is good down to - 10C so we even use V Twin in the Great White North. The stealer has a new 10W60 that apparently none of us know anything about but it may be a good option. I think everyone has a fit over a little bit of oil in the IC tubes during the early years of ownership. You'll learn to ignore it.
