If clean carfax and PPI checks out, this is very competitive pricing even before bargaining.

I find it strange that they don't have detailed pictures of the seats. That is the option that sets this car apart. I wonder how badly they are worn. If the seats are in line with the driver's speaker cover and the driver's door pull, I would think this car has a story that justifies the asking price. Also, take a look at the passenger side tail pipe, it looks to hang a little low and needs to be cleaned up. .

If clean and no story, then around mid-to-high $40ks. The BIN price is already set at the top of the range.
But..., some tough hurdles/considerations:
  1. Air-cooled P-cars don't usually sell via e-bay. There are much better venues; especially if as the seller states he's looking for an enthusiast buyer.
  2. Awkward to arrange for PPI, and w/o a PPI, this becomes a crapshoot. You may luck out w/ a clean car, or find out it needs between $5k to $15k of work.

it has a small fender bender at a gas station. Front bumper and I think one headlight was replaced...cold start has a small puff of smoke but then cleans out after a few seconds.

Why is/should PPI be awkward?

Ask around RL for good PPI place in ID.

As for value, it's tough to assess without a bunch more detail, particularly about service history, including what major items have been or need to be done, as well as age and condition of tires and suspension, etc.

These cars seem to have a depreciation floor, so I doubt you'd lose much regardless of price you pay now (in the 40s).

OTOH, you can buy a much-lower mileage example for not much more.

The awkwardness comes from having to fork out $$$ w/ no assurances of the transaction going thru' because it is an auction.

The seller can end the listing early if the car sells prior to auction end. They just have to pay ebay the fees which they can add to the final sale price to come out even on that one. It is done all the time.

I would ignore the auction component of eBay. I doubt very much that many cars are actually sold there on auction these days.

BaT and others have captured the real auction market for cars like these.

This was posted a few days ago here on RL. I think the price is competitive and would have seriously considered it if I didn't have my 993.

Seems underpriced to me. Drivers seat need to replaced or recovered. But the engine has been rebuilt at 45k miles so it should be good to go for many years to come. Of course, the history and a good PPI is the key!
