Went to visit the 993 this afternoon at our dealer. It’s been there for several days getting new suspension and fixing a couple minor things that were missed last fall.
We went specifically to look at the ride height and determine if satisfactory before it goes to alignment.
It’s getting a paint correction and ceramic coat on Saturday and we’ll pick it up Monday. It looks DRAMATICALLY different from stock (Dakar) ride height
Personally I’d probably go 10mm higher than where they set it - but hubby loves it where they put it, and as long as it rides comfortably for his bad back, I”m good with it.
There is something (to me) about the charm of the bone stock look of a 1995 993, even with the “rally-looking” ride height. I was all for lowering it, but not quite as much as they did.
But our service manager showed us the specs for ROW, and 993S and RS and he chose a “happy medium” based on discussions with us about what we want to achieve.
Can’t wait to get it home and start enjoying it. He said the original suspension didn’t return on its own, and despite no leaks, it was toast! Also had the updated clutch kinematic lever replaced and a few minor things.
Another customer came in and drooled over it and the manager told us he wanted to buy it, and if we ever sell, he’s got a buyer (but not likely we’ll sell any time soon). It was a nice compliment to know someone appreciated our 993 gem.
BEFORE AFTER
Looks great. I love silver on red.
Say, what suspension did you choose? I have a '95, too, in need of new suspension. How and why did you choose what you picked? Thanks so much. Enjoy!
^Thanks all. It’s Polar over Chestnut which is a very reddish brown.
We chose MCS based on detailed discussions with our service manager who knows 993s VERY well (there are 2 others in for service while ours is there). He knows us quite well and understands my husband’s limitations (bad back with multiple surgeries).
We were looking for a compromise on ride height with very comfortable ride and sporty but not harsh handling. Ride comfort was #1. Handling #2. Appearance 3rd. He has experience installing MCS. He thought it was adjustable enough to meet our needs in the comfort spectrum we're seeking. This car will not be on track.
He said the MCS 1 way non adjustable shocks with 250lb Front & 450lb Rear springs would suit our needs. We will also utilize 150lb & 250lb tender springs to give a more progressive spring rate that would be softer over straight line bumps.
I also read about MCS here on RL and it seems well vetted by several with experience.
I've been driving my recently acquired C4S a bit more and kept thinking my previous 95 C2 was quicker.
So I started looking at things.
Replaced the air filter and fuel filter, cleaned maf sensor.
Checked that it was getting wide open throttle. (all good)
Key on check varioram and resonance actuators (good).
No difference.
So, moved on to checking ignition.
Disconnect coil for upper plugs, starts/runs fine. Disconnect coil for lower plugs, it's backfiring badly.
Looking it over I find that #5 and #6 wires on the upper plugs are swapped at the distributor. Also, #1 lower plug wire was not clipped on.
No surprise but that made quite a difference! Felt like it picked up 40hp. So much nicer to drive now.
Thought it would be a good idea to verify horsepower so drove it to the shop today to check it out. For being completely stock aside from modified mufflers I think she is running good
Hubby drove it home today with new MCS suspension. He said it literally is like a different car. He cannot believe how fantastic it feels. He said he saw the bumps and highway joints and expected to feel the jolt - but the car absorbed them beautifully. It doesn’t “wander” at highway speeds like it did before. He is thrilled. I’ll likely drive it this weekend to see for myself to report first-hand.
I believe they put it at RS +5mm. I would actually be a little happier at RS + 10mm but this works for the time. I also think it looks lower because its on the stock 17" Wheels too.
