I haven't read much technical detail either. Maybe someone has something to share? However, the basic concept is to provide downforce/stability at high speeds and reduce drag at low speeds. Why they chose the particular speed? The Ruf settings seem to accomplish this better. Aside from some marketing value, It does maintain a clean, uninterrupted teardrop look of the 911. Basically providing function (especially for those autobahn drivers!) for those that do not like the fixed spoiler look

Read somewhere that Porsche originally was going to raise the spoiler at a higher speed where it would become really useful. That was something like 70-80 mph but certainly above the legal speed limit at the time anywhere in the USA and many venues in Europe.

However someone realized that the raised spoiler would then be a dead giveaway that the driver was speeding. So they dropped it to 50mph.

Might be apocryphal but somehow seems strangely plausible.

That might be the most believable reason I have heard. Wouldn't be the first time Americans were sold cars modified from their original design to meet our silly regulations.

Haha! You might not agree that this is a worthwhile feature, and it does seem gimmicky, but this is the primary reason why cars tuck away their protruding aero bits when they're not needed. Many examples of this from VW/Audi/Porsche/Bugatti/McLaren etc etc.

FWIW - adding 130lbs at the rear at highway speeds is actually pretty significant. It's like having another body sitting in the rear - but only when you need it.

Yes, the spoiler deployment setting is typically managed by resistors. This is a $2 mod in the VW world. I was biting my tongue when people were suggesting a $200 mod - but at least it would be a little more plug'n'play for those who don't want to get into the wiring themselves (I'm typically in this camp too )

BTW we looked into doing the RUF mod on the module as a group buy and found out several things:
1. Since they are not in stock, you have to remove your unit and send it to Germany (at your cost) for WEEKS to get the mod done,
2. I don't believe they warranted the work since they didn't have complete control of the finished product....i.e. your car,
3. It was VERY expensive...can't recall exact cost but WAY too much.

There's thread out there with all the info somewhere.

I live in a second ring suburb with a 50 mph speed limit punctuated by traffic lights. The spoiler going up and down like a window shade grew tedious. So I bought a used spoiler module off e-Bay and changed-out the 180 K Ohm resistor for a 50 K Ohm resistor as Mojorizing suggested in his 964 forum post. Now it's up at 70 and down at 30 mph.

Sunset Porsche Parts gives prices for a Spoiler Module: List Price $410.58 Sale Price: $299.36 Core Charge $251.50 for a net out-of-pocket cost of $47.86. That's great if you have a bad module and don't mind the 50/6 mph up and down.

ECU Doctors in Oakland Park, FL will repair your spoiler module for $175. The question is will they modify it to a 70/30 mph unit from 50/6 mph, check function and guarantee it? If I needed another Ruf style module, I would call the company and ask.

The up down thing does (did) drive me nuts too. So, I just completed this task. For a RHD, and a slight difference in my module:

1: Module is located on left (passenger side).
2: My module was not screwed in place as OP but fastened to a bracket.
3: Removed plug cover in situ, then secured plugs with tape (took Opo's advice, thanks.)
3: Removed plug in situ (very carefully).
4: Removed plugs #8 and #12 taped back on the loom.
5: Covered the remaining plugs with tape and refastened plug.
6: Removed tape & secured the cover.
7: Tested. Yeah!

for those who have done this mod, do you notice higher oil temps on the highway(than with the spoiler deployed)?
i always wondered if the spoiler wall channeled cool air into the engine bay?
