Default Need help identifying stuff falling from my car

I'll preface this by saying that my 993 ownership orientation is an ongoing trek that presents new learning opportunities as stuff happens. I'm sure this comes under the more mundane of the 993's many mysteries but I noticed what looked like oily filter-like materail poking through the front bumper's underside air vents, on both the R & L side. The material seemed to be crumbling from old age...sort of like me. Anyway, I assume it's a filter but I'm curious what the part is and how to replace it. Thanks.

It might be from the gaskets around the wheel well liners, you could pull the liners to get a better idea

Yep, same stuff on mine. There is 1 radiator on eace side (Left side for AC, Right side for oil) To prevent airflow from going around instead of through the fins. The factory used that material you see decomposing to fill in the gaps.

Bill is right. The material is the foam pieces that seal the bumper cover against the two heat exchangers to keep the air flow directed through the cores instead of around them. Replace them when you pull the bumper cover for another reason. Nothing to worry about.

I addressed these on my 964 recently. $50 worth of rubberized foam. Total ripoff but necessary. I made some patterns for future recreation of the pieces w/o paying Porsche prices.

What’s missing here is a sealing wedge or bumper seal pieces. I learned about them reading this thread.

So you can see it here, they’re just pieces of rubberized foam w/ a beveled edge.

You can see here where I installed them w/ some 3M spray adhesive.

So it’s basically 4 pieces of foam $.10 foam that cost $50. I made myself some patterns for future use as these pieces will likely fail again.

Yeah, the material they make it out of is crap, it falls apart, and even completely disappears. The ones I had for the Turbo bumper are a different shape than the ones show above though. I needed the car when I did mine, so I rush and did not trace them out, in retrospect I should have.

Cheers,

Mike

Hey Vandit, Nice job! Any possibility of giving us the dimensions of those two pieces including width)? Would appreciate that greatly so we can all make these!

Thanks guys. I'm always amazed at how much knowledge there is on this board, no matter how obscure the problem.

Remember my car is a 964, so I don't think the pieces are the same on the 993.

Looking at the PET diagram, the pieces definitely have a different shape.

The parts you guys need are
993.575.740.00
993.575.738.00

You need 2 of each.

Looks like the Turbo-style front bumper has another seal which you also need 2 of.

This is great info guys!

This stuff came out from the grills at the bottom of both front fenders of my 993 a few years ago. I had completely forgotten about it but could never figure out what it was.

Many thanks

Are these glued in place from the factory or do they lock into place. I found another thread with a template to make the foam inserts yourself. I'm installing new A/C and Oil fan resistors this weekend so I'll peek to see if my foam is still intact.

Yup, turns to crap after 20 years of service, somehow I don't think it was an in-warranty replacement item.

Now the dealer sourced insulating blanket over the engine is truly crap as I installed one and it started to break down after three years and just a few thousand miles.

Next time the engine is out I will replace it with one of those aftermarket non-foam rubber thin blankets. A thinner blanket will make servicing the idle valve and the air intake a lot easier.
