The 997 will burst that 993 bubble

And the next day, I'm still looking for my blog. Anyone available to help me find it? I've already looked all around the C4S with the dead battery, and the wannabe RS. Even looked out in the lot around the carcass of the RSA. Next stop, over to where the 964 Targa shell is stored? Doubt it's worthwhile to look around where the three torsion bar cars are.

Why, Ruby. It was apparently a paint to sample car, that most resembles Ruby Red from the 356 days.
No, but it was part of a strip club down in the San Diego suburbs, from where I rescued it. Maybe Ed's got a picture handy to post. Got nothing on the shop computer to post. Or go over on the 911 Forum and search for Ruby.

It's possible in the NA market I suppose, but I don't see that happening w turbos.I don't see 993tt or 997tt prices dropping anytime soon.
996 cars are s different story, almost any 993 is worth more than a comparable 996.

I agree the 997 looks great and harkens back to the great looking 993 look. The 997 is vastly superior in every measure of performance.
I see the difference that will always make a 964 & 993 Desirable is the extremely low cost to own once the car has 80K miles on the clock.
Basically oil, brake pads and the occasional caps & rotors with just the following extraordinary items once in the life of the car;
Struts,
Steering Rack
1st & 2nd gear synchros
Power steering belt & ignition wires
Door check strap repair - maybe
Valve adjuster cartridges
A Clutch
I believe the 997 has a vastly larger set of items that will fail and need repairing and because of the complexity involved there will not be a huge aftermarket supplier network to keep costs down.
I believe this will impact dramatically the out of warranty value of any of the water cooled newer 911

BIG difference between 993TT and 997TT, depreciation and price wise.
Prices on 997TT have dropped, and will drop more, because of the sheer numbers they made. You can get a nice 997TT for $70K now. That car was double that 5 years ago when new, so they have certainly dropped. They will probably drop even more when the 991TT comes out next year or so.
On the other hand, the 993TT has remained relatively stable, price wise, over the last 5 years, because it's already depreciated out, they made very few of them, and they don't make them any more. None of that you can say about the 997TT, which is why they continue to fall in price. The 997TT is still a great car tho

Before the thread is locked, I thought we could prepare a list of the mystique 993s have. I will start.
The 993s have mystique because:
(1) You need to use an immobilizer to start the car (and they break)
(2) It has a way of keeping you in line when the CEL appears.
(3) Carbon buildup is your friend.
(4) Weeping is a way of rationalizing oil leaks are ok
(5) The ac cost what to rebuild !!!
(6) Costco sells the DME relays in six packs.
(7) Rear windows can shatter with no advance notice.
(8) Oops...there is rust around my window.
Just having fun guys......

Obviously you are disappointed with your decision to move from a 993 to a 997. I'm sorry you have not been able to come to terms with your decision; but stop trying to make yourself feel better by continually taking shots at us on the 993 board.
12 of your last 20 posts have been on this board. Maybe it's time to get back into a 993.

Mark,
Interesting point you have raised. I enjoyed my 993 for 8 years. It was terrific. I need to think about it. BTW.... Did you have any other mystique items to add to the list? My comments are not meant to take shots but rather to give a little reality back to the kool-aid drinking crowd who likes to put down all other Porsche products.
I hope you are not suggesting that I am not welcome within the inner sanctum of this forum? I enjoy the playfulness of this juiced up group.

How does this affect 993 prices? Probably not at all. Enthusiasts who want the apogee of air-cooled 911's will continue to keep 993 prices high.
But as reference, I've been hunting for several months for a new (to me) 911 to replace my 911SC and have looked at dozens of cars in person and hundreds online. Excluding anything nasty, salvage titled, that's had significant bodywork or needing any sort of immediate mehanical attention, and assuming you get a good deal but not some extremely lucky bargain, IMHO:
- A $21K budget will get you a 80K MkI 996.
- A $26K budget will get you a minty 55K 2004 C2 (bought one last week)
- A $36K budget will get you a nice, sub 50K mile 2005 or 2006 997 C2.
- A $42K budget will get you a nice lower mileage 996 Turbo.
- A $26K low mileage 996 vs. a $26K high mileage 993?
- A $36K mid-mileage 997 vs. a $36K mid mileage 993?
- A $42K low mileage 996 Turbo vs. a $42K low mileage 993?
