The 997 will burst that 993 bubble

One can still get a really nice 993 in the upper $30s.
Advantage: 993.

I like all Porsche models. Some I like more than others and some I even love; like the 993. Everyone has their own opinions. It doesn't matter to me if the value of my 993 goes up or down and it doesn't matter to me if the value of the 997 goes up or down. I will continue to drive my 993 because I love it and not because it has or will increase in value.

Typical sour grapes logic. Can't afford a 993 so I'll just get the one that Porsche made to look like a 993.
BTW 997s are also far "superior" to long hood 911s. But have you seen the pricing delta between the two? "Superior" does not always mean faster, bigger, more bells and whistles. My 993 is superior to a 997 because I find it to be more engaging and demanding.
Did we spoil your weekend yet?

I'm starting to see 997 prices dip into the upper $30s. This is going to drive 993 prices down toward more realistic numbers as the 993 has been over-inflated for far too many years. I think the 993 is a gorgeous car but for that kind of jack I can have a car that stylistically is every bit as nice but with exponentially better performance. As far as the air-cooled novelty of the 993, hell, I'll just keep my 964 around for 1/2 the price of a 993, and only marginally less of a performer.

When I look at my brother's 964 I want a 964, recently I took a testdrive in a 997 and almost traded my 993 for it. I would love to have a Magnus Walker type Hotrod 911 and if I could afford a 991 I would buy one today.
There will be a day when my 993 will leave with a new owner and I will buy something else, but never ever will money be the reason for me to make a switch.

The 997 looks so much like the 996 from the back, I still can't tell them apart.
From the front, the only give-away to me is the lights.
The 993 doesn't look like anything. It's the last of the old-school cars. In my mind, besides the changed interior and motor, the 996 and later looks terrible from the outside because from the side, the flat slope of the rear end was eliminated. Even my wife agrees it is a less pleasing design.

I have been fortunate to have had most of the 911 series and my next one will be a 991. And it will have soul as much as all the other series. Enough with the BS. It is getting old already.

I bought my 1990 C2 with 93K miles 2 years ago for 18K and have absolutely no regrets. I love my car. You have got to have an air-cooled 911. Latest Hagerty value reports that anything aircooled form Germany "is hot". I wouldn't worry about the AWD system. I have only heard favorable reports.
I'm just curious what the general consensus among 911/3.2 fans is of the 964? I've driven both and they are completely different cars in terms of feel, comfort, and ergonomics. They are both phenomenal driving cars, but honestly, is the 964 a wimp's version of a true 911? The 3.2 takes some real driving skill while the 964 feels like you're almost in autopilot. Too easy.
I've only had my 964 for a few months but could not imagine ever moving to a 993 or later model. You just cannot improve upon the classic look or ride of the 964. I've driven later models and although the 993 may still have the feel of a 964, it does not have the classic body shell that the 911 had for 30 years. The 997 is a mass-produced luxury/touring car without the soul of a true 911. Stick with your 964. The only other 911 I would even think about would be a 3.2.
I'd go to a 993 if I were you. The styling is gorgeous and you get a bit of an upgrade in performance and comfort. 993 prices are dropping and you should be able to find one in the mid twenties if you look hard enough. I actually found two 993s this past fall in the upper teens- 6spds with 90k mls.
I am a proud 964 owner. And I would probably not be if it wasn't for the 993. I used to absolutely salivate over these cars. When looking for my first porsche about a year ago, all I heard was how the 993 was THE HOLY GRAIL of air cooled porsches, the pinnacle and apotheosis of the 911 evolution. And every porsche nut I came across ripped on everything pre-993 and everything post-993. And who could argue? The 3.2 was too antiquated, the 964, while wholly new, was too restrained and problematic, and the 996, a de-evolution of the 911 with its massed produced, subaru liquid-cooled engine, and headlights which looked like they vomitted all over themselves. And obviously, there is some truth to all this, but the real truth is that 993 makes the 964 and 996 affordable. The 993 is so coveted that the 3.2, 964 and 996 can all be had for less than a new Accord or Camry. And while these models are holding their own value, and in some cases increasing, the 993 is dropping in value... fast. What was a $40K car 5yrs ago, is now selling in the the mid 20s. Heck, I came across a 993 5spd in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with 100k miles for $17.5K.

Thankfully some logic to this rather silly thread. Hey dopes out there.....it is not about the $$$$ but about the enjoyment of driving great cars. And each series of 911s has that special Porsche touch that we all love.

The 964 is a good ride, I had a 1990, but it's not a 993!
The 993 is the Holy Grail of air cooled 911 's. Period! History
The 997's have there own fan base, but they will not drive 993 prices down
