Default Is there a Porsche after the 964 ?

I'm wondering if any of you guys out there have moved onto other 911's in addition to or after your 964 ? I've thought about moving to 993 or perhaps even a 997, but I've had a 964 for about 12 years now and I still love it, especially with the lowered spring setup I have that Andial did for me years ago. (Eibach/RS measurements). The thing is like driving a cart ! Car feels smaller than the newer cars and you get to see the road in front of you. I am not sure I am going to be able to get that driving experience with a later car and I would probably regret ever selling it. So, here I am with the same car after 12 years....the spy shots of the new 911 coming out looks nice, but then again it is not going to be like my go-kart. Am I crazy ?

I am absolutely right with you man! I've only had my 964 for a few months but could not imagine ever moving to a 993 or later model. You just cannot improve upon the classic look or ride of the 964. I've driven later models and although the 993 may still have the feel of a 964, it does not have the classic body shell that the 911 had for 30 years. The 997 is a mass-produced luxury/touring car without the soul of a true 911. Stick with your 964. The only other 911 I would even think about would be a 3.2.

I have had a lot of 911's. In my opinion there are two moves from a 964:

1. 993
2. Early 74 or earlier car or rgruppe style car built on a real early chassis.

The other move is IF you keep your 964, then of course you could buy a water cooled car.

i wouldn't even consider it. i've gone the opposite direction: first 996tt then993tt and now rsa. of the 3 the rsa is the only one that really truly connects me to the road.

I agree with the RSA comment - and of course the '92 US Cup is a blast to drive as both are highly connected. I still think the 964 line-up was one of the best 911 runs ever. The 94 3.6 Turbo and 92 America Roadster round out a great line-up of great looking cars.

Regarding the 993, it is a great car as well - but i never connected with the design. I own a 996 and a 997. GT3s are a different beast, and I chose it as a track car over an RSA. The "base" 996/997 lines are both a lot of fun, but they are really modern cars. Great DDs, but lacking in the old soul that to me is Porsche. For the modern era, the GT3s are the best throw-back to those old days.... After many years of ignoring the pre-SC 911s, I am really longing for a 73 RS... Someday.

Yup, 04/05 GT3; 964 RS-ish; 73 RS or 73 RS-ish. This is the hat trick!

Looks-wise the 964 is the last of the true 911s. That tells all.
Performance-wise, stock for stock, more modern 911s are faster.
Raw-feeling-wise, the older the better.

No.

Now, to get one more, that's another story.

My take is based on spending the first 9 years of Porsche ownership and track driving in a 993 C4S. Went to a 964 C2 and dropped track times immediately and absolutely love the 964. I like the rear end of the 993 better, but like the front end of the 964 better, but this is a personal preference. My Dad has a 997S and that is a very nice car, but not quite what I want for periodic street and mostly track driving.

So, to answer you question...I wouldn't move to the 993 unless you just absolutely love the style differences since the performance and seat of pants feel differences will be minimal. As for a newer car...for street I really like the 997S, but for track or some track duty gotta look into the 997 GT3.

Enjoy the dreaming...

+1

I went (almost) full circle from a 993C4S to the 3.6 Turbo and a 997GT3, then back to an RSA.

The RSA is by faaar the most fun to drive and it is definitely a keeper (so BTW is the 3.6 Turbo). IMHO GT3s are over-rated. They are uncomfortable and loud to drive on the road and have very limited use as an everyday commuter car plus there is the attention factor that I just didn't feel comfortable with (would you leave your GT3 at the airport parking lot?) . Well driven GT3s are awesome on the track. The speeds get outright scary but I could not afford to "leave the GT3 at the track" so I went with the RSA which is much more predictable plus there is the "underdog factor" when you start passing the GT3s
