Exclamation 964 Targa, Anyone?

How reliable is the Targa edition of 964 compared to other of the classic Porsche models?

Any major problems and flaws?

The only difference will be the Targa top, if your buying one, run a water test to make sure the top isn't leaking.

These cars are rare to find for sale, what's the fix for the top anyways if it's leaking?

The targa vinyl shrinks and splits with age. The rubber seals to the front and rear compress and harden up as do those on the sides. A few drips around the front quarterlights in heavy rain.
I'm about to get it recovered and renew the side rubber seals, have already done the front and rears. Cost in UK about £400 GBP using OE vinyl plus cost of the side seals.

Disappointing, but it's good that it doesn't cost a big fortune to replace with OEM one.

It can be quite expensive, Porsche list for the complete roof is over ten grand, skins are not expensive nor are the side seals too steep its the rear seal that is expensive (and the front isnt cheap either)

If you own a Targa or Convertible it will eventually leak, the better you maintain it the less problem it is but they all eventually will let some water in

When it is apparent that I wont be taking my roof off for a whole (in December) I grease the seals with pure petroleum jelly...works great

Also if you are gonna have a targa get the body support braces for it, I dont care what anyone else says, I gotta have that lift off roof (even though it can be a PITA , I am willing to put up with it..

Nothing is more unattractive than a targa, or a cab for that matter. All 911s should be coupes.

Helpful post tcabler. I'm curious, how did you go from being a "proud owner" on 03/19/2011 to being "torn" about which "weekend toy" to buy just 9 days later?

Perfromance of the 996 vs. the styling and old-school feel of the 964?

I asked Adrian Crawford about the build quality of each and he could not help emphasizing that the 964 is a hand-crafted, more solid built car that does not share cheap, mass produced parts with all the other models. I've also heard that the 996 engine was produced by Subaru.

And every porsche nut I came across ripped on everything pre-993 and everything post-993. And who could argue? The 3.2 was too antiquated, the 964, while wholly new, was too restrained and problematic, and the 996, a de-evolution of the 911 with its massed produced, subaru liquid-cooled engine, and headlights which looked like they vomitted all over themselves. And obviously, there is some truth to all this, but the real truth is that 993 makes the 964 and 996 affordable. The 993 is so coveted that the 3.2, 964 and 996 can all be had for less than a new Accord or Camry. And while these models are holding their own value, and in some cases increasing, the 993 is dropping in value... fast. What was a $40K car 5yrs ago, is now selling in the the mid 20s. Heck, I came across a 993 5spd in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with 100k miles for $17.5K.

Yes, the targa tops will ultimately start to leak. Dan Pechtel did a great job rebuilding my targa top:

He is also a good source for hard to find spare parts.

No association other than a satisfied customer.
