Default 993 Transmission drop - pretty easy!

Neil (nsully) and I spent part of today extracting the transmission from his '97. After an hour of obligatory coffee and idle chit-chat, the wrenches began flying. All in all, it took us three hours to do the deed. I think we looked at the manual once.... it just sort of worked without a great deal of fanfare. After lunch, we gave the transmission a nice scrubbing. It will be on its way to Brian Copans in the next few days for a general overhaul, Porsche Motorsports LSD, and perhaps a few other tweaks.

I really enjoyed this 'operation' and once again learned just a bit more about these amazing machines. (Exactly one week ago I spent an enjoyable day replacing Steve's suspension, with the assistance of Neil and the great Cactus.) When the day comes for a clutch replacement on my junker, it will happen in my garage. No question.

Neil intends to do a full write-up of the procedure once we've re-installed the transmission. So, for now, I'll post a few pics of today's madness. Enjoy:

Hey guys, I am really jealous. I wished I could have been there. Great pics and I’m looking forward to the DIY. By the way, what were the symptoms before the drop?

Wow, you guys are inspirational. I am looking forward to the DIY. Maybe I will change my clutch/flywheel sooner than later.

I'm envious as I have no p-car DIY buddies around here. Did you have to drop the back end of the engine to get the tranny out?

Really bummed I missed out on this but hoping to log in on the reassembly! I want to know how you got the car so high, what flavor Dogfish was consumed, and is the trans sealed so you could fire a high pressure stream at it? Looks great after cleaning and nice product placement nsullysizzle!

No. The front of the engine will wish to droop somewat once the support given by the transmission is removed - but the rear stays as is.

Way, way cool! Nicely done. BTW, I would be very keen on seeing a full write-up on this procedure, especially the reinstallation part. The tranny-only R&R is something that's been talked about a lot, but written about/described very little. And I have to do my clutch soon...
