When I was a kid in the '70s, my dad used to dump used motor oil in a hole in the PEPCO right-of-way behind dcdude's MD boyhood home*, address withheld.

My how times have changed. FWIW, I try to do all engine cleaning at the coin-up car washes, where at least they supposedly recycle the water. I usually use engine heat plus Gunk and fairly high pressure water. You probably don't want to wash your new car after I de-grease an engine, but at least the nasty chemicals are not heading to the ocean. I'm only 4 miles from the beach!

Transmission went back in this morning. Apart from nearly splitting my skull wide open on a jack stand, the install was pretty uneventful. I'm sure the transmission's owner will chime in with a few more details.

Needless to say, it's not nearly as difficult as some have stated.

Andreas, it was the floor jack! After you left I checked it for damage.

Got everything back together, and look forward to driving again. Tranny refresh, LSD, LWF, Steve W. Re-Map, lots of other stuff WhooHoo!
As stated the project was fun and very satisfying. The concern over inserting the clutch fork shaft appears to be unfounded.
I've got a bunch of pics and notes, so I plan on sitting down with Andreas and developing a sequential DIY.
The real key though is taking on this type of thing with a friend, and enthusiast. As a matter of fact Andreas informed me this morning of our next "project".
Thanks for all of the support,
Neil

Of course. Other changes will include: replacing the black interior with a gray one, installing stock springs and a fresh set of Monroes, re-attaching my front license plate, and sourcing a straight set of 16" wheels.

Don't forget a nice new engine tray, I hear they make the car handle better!

Please don't stop the direction of this thread, but I'd like to ask a stupid question. What was the reason for measuring to the lip of the fender? Is that how high the car has to be to clear the transmission from the underside of the car to remove it ? Sorry for the interruption. I'm very much looking forward to the DIY write-up !

For no reason other than to show how high the car was at that point.
