Good point, had 285s on it though, so no difference noticed.

Sounds like for street use and DD use, they are the best bang for the buck. With suck great tread life, they must have a "harder" compound and therefore not soo great on the track.... Chris or anyone else, what have you found to be the best bang for the buck on the track? Thanks....

Not beating my own drum here but in the track test that was part of the evaluation by Tirerack they did very well.

GREAT! That just totally made me feel better about picking up such cheap tires! Now I'm looking forward to putting them on!

I'm going to do the local PCA Auto-X this year, we will see how they are compared to the S03's that are on there now.

Guys...don't know if this is hijacking...but I have a set of Sumitomo HTR Z II 225/40 and 285/30 R-18's to go off my 97 C4S...Just went up to 996 hollow spokes so I don't need them....you can have the set for 120 + shipping, acutally 100 for the fronts and 20 for the rears) The fronts have like 4k on them and the rears have like 35% roughly...more in the middle (bad alignment) give or take..one is better than than other...

I recently put them on my 996TT and they are night and day better than the Pirelli's in every aspect.

That's great to hear! My experience with Pirellis has been that they tend to be harsh and loud.

I've even done a track day on these tires and they were great. I had no trouble keeping up with (or passing) other cars shod with MUCH more track oriented tires. Can't beat them for the price. I remember one of the tire technicians at Gran Turismo giving me some flack for mounting these on my car....he thought they were cheap trash. He has no clue.

I'm in need of four new tires and am seriously considering the Sumitomo HTR Z III. How are you feeling a month later about the Sumitomos?

I've had them on my car for 2 weeks, about 400mi.

Old tires were S02's, fronts about 50%, rears they were almost slicks.

Likes over S02's
Much quieter
Much Smoother
Better in rain (could be the tread of the S02's)
Good Grip
GOOD PRICE
Better wear

Dislikes
Less turn in feel
A little less grip
So far don't feel as confident as with the S02's.

But for a DD, I'm SUPER happy! $400 for new S02 rears, vs $400 for a full set of Sumi's, that will also last more then 1200mi.

How is the hydroplaning in standing water? I'm thinking about these tires for my Miata.

Haven't had enough rain since buying to comment. In the review at TireRack they commented the wet traction could have been a little better but that may be a relative evaluation for a performance tire.

I've got Kumho Ecsta Mx tires (235 front and 275 rear) on my NB coupe. Finally have a good sense about their performance. Drove 400 miles to VIR last week, tracked them all weekend, and drove home on them. Very impressed with this compromise. Great wear ratings, not too loud on the street, and very grippy on the track. Not to mention that they're just about $200 per tire.

Some have complained that they get a bit greasy when overheated, but I did not have that problem and we were running 30 min sessions. I may, however, not be pushing the tires as hard as others (best lap was only a 2:28).

Wandering over from the 968 board...

Just ordered a set of the HTRZ III for my new 993 Cup wheels. This thread is making me feel a lot better about the purchase. So hard to go off of so few TR reviews even with the very strong test results.

Time will tell...
