One more thing, the unit has a built in memory chip.
So when you request a route, the unit reads from the disc and saves it on memory.
You can remove the map disc when the route is saved a minute later or so, and insert a music cd whilst navigation is functioning.
I guess Europe is ahead of the US, because everything I have been told -- including looking at the Navteq website -- suggests the US updates ended in 2004. Before anyone in the US buys one of these machines, he/she may wish to verify whether maps will ever be updated again, and if so, how often. (I know I read someplace else that Navteq had no plans to issue updated US cd's for the Porsche unit.)

I have called Navteq, Porsche, and E-mailed Becker-USA this morning to ask about map updates for this unit (model 7820). Navteq said to call Porsche, Porsche HQ said to call a dealer, The Porsche HQ recomended Dealer didn't have any way to find out about updates. They said they just bought a DVD set for a later Porsche (2004 996) direct from Navteq. So basically back to "call Navteq" . Haven't got a response from Becker-USA yet. While this e-bay deal is certainly great, AND I certainly don't want to dissuade anyone else from going ahead with a purchase, unless I get better tech support from someone, I think I'm gonna pass.

Me too unless I hear to the contrary about no further US updates. The local Scottsdale dealer was clueless about updates as was the vendor of the 50 units advertised on Ebay. I love the price, but here in the rapidly growing Phoenix area map updates are essential.

P.S. There is a similar thread on the 996 board and several people are stating that there will be no further US updated maps.

24 euros on becker site
No CDC, just the iPod through the unit. This is not the becker unit, but the OEM Porsche one, so the antenna is not included. That's why I asked if there is a Porsche part # for the nav unit. My hopes are not to have 5m of cable coiled up.

So 24 Euro is just over $50 plus shipping.

From what I understand is that Navteq is no longer supporting mapping updates for North America, 2004 being the last year. I've been very happy with my Garmin Nuvi 360, mapping and points of interest are updated frequently and being portable so it comes with me when I travel and need to get around in a rental car. One nice feature is its ability to speak the name of the streets.

Yea, I had pounds in my head not Euro. Anyway, I paid the ridiculous $95 for it.
So I still got a brand new unit with everything for $400.

DAM, where were you 30min ago, before I sent in payment? Oh well, even with the $95 antenna, it's a good deal!

The fellow I dealt with years ago was named Burl - he had the Aux cable available.

I want the unit to control the iPod, as it will be stuck in the glove box, does anyone have any Denison, DICE, or Icelink installed? I'm kind of bummed that it doesn't charge the iPod also.

If not, my thoughts were to install a cradle, with the wireless remote, & just use the remote.

Well, not to make you feel worse (sorry!) but FYI for others... Sunset has this part for $25. They have to order it.
Just ordered one.

Default Go Garmin!

+1 on the Garmin. I have an older street pilot and my wife has a Nuvi - awesome!
