When did you first know you had to have a 911?
I'm sure this topic has been brought up many times before but I couldn't find it in the search...
I was driving down the George Washington Parkway on the way to DC on a sunny, summer day and a very rare colored yellow 911 passed me. It was love at first sight. I knew in my gut that I had to own a yellow 911 Carrera one day. I didn't have the means to do so, but it became my obsession. A few years later, I went to the PCA meeting in Tyson's Corner VA to pick up a PCA magazine (they wouldn't mail it to me I was curious to check out their classified ads in the back) and was ready to bolt out of there with my magazine in hand when someone suggested that if I was looking for a pre-owned 911, I should stick around for the meeting as they had a swap and sell afterwards. This was before PCA listed all the for sale cars on their website.
A guy just happened to show up with a 1988 Venetian Blue/Blue 911 Carrera and was about to be transferred to Germany and was needing to sell it. It was about twice the price I was looking to spend ($24,500) and it wasn't yellow, but I decided to look at it anyway... I was looking for a 1982-83 high mileage 911 SC instead. One look at the car and I felt my legs go weak. I somehow had to have it. I had my friend drive it the next day for me (I hadn't driven a stick shift in many years) and he said "GO FOR IT" which I did. The rest is history. It wasn't the yellow one I originally had to have, but the color combo worked for me nonetheless.
My stepdaughter thought it was cool too
Just for the heck of it, I just checked on cars.com and autotrader.com for an 82-89 yellow 911 Carrera coupe and as usual, there still aren't any for sale! Guess that color wasn't in the cards for me.
It wasn't till 5 years later that I bought my 993, but it all started with that yellow 911. Was there a defining moment in your life that you said to yourself... "Oh my gosh, I HAVE to have a 911"?
Cheers,
Steve R

I was 14. My sister's boyfriend had just bought a new 78' Targa. He took my brother and me to an abandoned race track and proceeded to give us "lessons" in the dynamics of the 911. And then he put us behind the wheel. I learned to drive a stick shift, at 14, on a 911 at a race track!!!! I haven't been the same since, and 26 years later I have the car I've dreamed of as a little boy, my Black 95 C4. The enjoyment I get from just being behind the wheel and cruising is priceless. There are other cars out there, but even if I was obscenly rich I'd still have my 993

i was 4 years old, i'm now 22. my favorite car was a dark blue 911. i had my tonsils removed and as a present for surgery my mother got me a 911 model, but they didnt make it in blue so she hand painted it for me. when i was 14 my dad was in the market for a car and wound up looking at the 996's. 3 days later he came home with a 4 year old(1995) 993 polar silver/black/black cabrio with 9k miles on it. he sold it when i was 16 and got me my first car, a blue bmw 330. i was 20 when i got a job and wanted to start saving for a new car and was still in love with polar silver 993's. new cars just didnt tickle me really. 1 month and 9 days after i turned 22 i bought my own polar silver/grey/black 993 and fulfilled a dream that i had wanted for the previous 18 or so years

For me it was in high school, around 1979 I was into drawing cars and it was my favorite subject. I still have one of those drawings on the wall in my bedroom for so long ago.
If you've seen the commercial with the schoolboy and the Porsche dealership.. that was me (a little older but me).
The final blow, that cemented my need for a 911 came in my Junion year of High School when my buddy let me drive his mothers 911Targa down Hwy 17 (Santa Cruz mountains) at a speeds that if I posted them would get me banned from the board. HOOOOKED!!! I'd been working my towards one ever since (had a 12 year detour while I got married and had some kids bought a bunch of Mercedes-Benz thinking that was the answer).

When I was about 10 I got a "concise encyclopedia" book for my birthday. Under "C" for cars was a line drawing of a 911 Turbo. I was already a car fan, but this was where my Porsche obsession began. I subsequently had books and models and then one day my Dad said a friend of his had a bit of a surprise for us. The guy had a car dealership and in the showroom was a beautiful lime green 77 SC (no rear wing) with tartan upholstery. I got my photo taken sitting in it and I was smitten forever.
Whilst I absolutely love my 993, I often wonder what happened to that SC and how it has weathered the years. I think it would look fantastic in the garage next to my yellow baby......even with the tartan seats! God the 70s have a lot to answer for!

First time I watched the opening sequence of "Le Mans" (early '70s, around 12 or 13 years old maybe?). Didn't quite knock off the '70 Boss 302 in Grabber Orange replete with shaker hood and nonsensical rear louvers that I wanted first and foremost off its pedestal (hey I was a kid...hadn't been formally introduced to the 'Fix Or Repair Daily' phenomenon yet...that came later during college). But the 911 in that sequence with McQueen behind the wheel sure was cool...and those blazing 917s just reinforced the brand.

When I was five. My uncle got one of the first 911's imported to the U.S.
It was a 1966, white with black interior. He took me and my sister for
rides in it near his Setauket L.I. home. I'll never forget the sounds, smells
and speed of that car. I knew that one day I would own one.

Neighbors bought a new 356 in '62. I was 16. I postponed my gratification till I was 43.

Steve McQueen's son still has that black 911S.

I was twelve, and my mom had just pulled her Cadilac out of the gas station. I saw a red 911 (probbly a 72) and instantly realized that was the coolest car I'd ever seen. A 911 is the only car for which "there is no subsitute."
