When did you first know you had to have a 911?

1974. Age 12. Loved the old body style, adored the new. Made a commitment that I'd own one someday.
As I was finishing college, I promised myself I'd own one within 5 years of graduation. At the 5 year point I started looking. Took me a year to find what I wanted, found a sweet '86... figured that would be my one and only forever.
That lasted until I saw the first pics of a 993... just like 1974, I promised that one day soon I'd have one. In 1998 I got my '96... actually kept the '86 for many months until I sickened of the ex- bitching about having too many cars. Finally sold it... and have regretted it ever since. Should've gotten rid of her sooner!!!

I was about 10 (1970) and my uncle (rest his soul) was a mechanic for a Porsche/Audi dealership. He would moonlight at his home and I would help by just hanging out in the car playing with ***** and pretending to drive. I've been around Porsches and VWs a long time. I guess I've always wanted one since then, but it took 30 more years to actually purchase one.

My next door neighbour owned a white 964 coupe and took me for a spin. Up until that point I always thought 911s were just upgraded Beetles with handling problems driven by yuppy posers. I sat in the passenger seat and my opinion lowered even more when I saw the dashboard which looked so old fashioned for a car made in the 90s.
10 mins later I was hooked as he comprehensively out accelerated, out cornered and out braked every car on the road without breaking a sweat. The seat held me in like a vice and the engine emitted a glorious raucous howl.
A couple of years later I drove a friends red 964RS for an hour over deserted B roads in England (eg B660), once I'd done this, my mind was made up, there was nothing that could have stopped me from buying a 964.
I sold my pathetic useless POS VW Golf V5 and bought a proper car at last.

For as long as a I can remember... So can I summarize with three milestones around Porsches in general?
1) Matchbox Cars: My parents tell me that from age 2 on, I always loved the Porsches (remember the bright green with orange interior 911?) By age 10, I remember playing with only Porsches (911 & 928) as if they were in "my" garage.
2) Summer 1980: I was 7, and my parent's were building their dream house in Connecticut. They decided to put in a "woodland pond" style pool ($$$) and the pool company owner showed up in his brand new green 928 with tan leather interior. He let me sit inside, and I can still smell the leather! I was instantly hooked...
3) Fall, Mid-1980s: I was around 10 or 12, and playing little league football. I vividly remember seeing a teammate's dad drive down the dirt road every few practices in a white 1970's 911 that said "Carrera" in white on blue under the doors... It was so good looking, and both looked and sounded raw. At that point, I was really hooked on 911s.
Interestingly enough, I moved away from CT about 10 years ago and have thought about that white 911 on occassion, wondering if it was a 'real' 73 RS... This past May, I took my son to the ALMS races at Miller Motorsports Park to show him the RS Spyders, and we arrived early to watch the SpeedVision races. Wouldn't you know it, but my old friend from my childhood footballs days was there with his dad racing a BMW in one of the series. Of course, I was able to introduce both of them to my son and ask that question.... Yes, it was a 73 RS Touring (original) and he told me that he sold it a few years back for over $300K.
Ahh, Porsches and 911s. There is no subsitute!

I was 15 years old and my Dad's co-worker came over to the house in a brand new 79' 911 Turbo. It was green with brown leather. I knew at that time a 911 was in the cards for me. My dad's co-worker still has that car btw.

In 1988 in San Diego - my first one! A bright yellow 75' 911S - it was a great little buggy. Followed up with a few SC's, a 3.2 and finally the King of Porsche - 993.

i knew i had to have a 911 when:
i was about 6. i first heard & saw one up close when it passed me & my big wheel on the sidewalk. stopped for the stop sign & then sped away. i stood straddling my machine lusting for THAT.
the closer was my dentist. his office wait area had a stack of panorama zines... (as good as the playboys that my mom didn't know about @ the barber)...
and then the ride in an 80's 911sc that snapped my head back into the headrest finished me off.
i was & still am a gone-er...
porsche porsche porsche... "the" 911.

Right after seeing John Travolta driving his late 80s Targa in the movie - A Civil Case.
I began the search and in 6 months bought my 993 in January of 2004.

My Dad sold cars at British Motors in San Fancisco during the 60's. He would often complain that Porsche owners were the hardest to try and sell a car to (Austin Healy, Jag, etc) as they were always on about how their cars were better.
That awakened me to the brand and over years have admired the shape and the uniqueness of the rear mounted air cooled engine.

Like most youngsters, I've always wanted a sports car, flip-flopping between Ferrari & Porsche as my dream cars. Over the years Ferrari fell by the wayside as I started to think they looked like the decade they were built in! Porsche 911's on the other hand all come from the same basic style, and look great whatever the vintage.
Roll on a few years and I got married and discovered that my wife also liked Porsche's. A match made in heaven! We'd always look at adverts for Porsche without being really serious about buying one, until this year. I don't know what it was but out of the blue my wife wanted to look at one advertised in a nearby town. This led to our first test drive in a 911 and that was it - we had to have one!
Plundered the savings account and went on the hunt (well you only live once!). We've ended up with a white 964 cabrio in fantastic condition!
Any guilt I feel about this extravagance quickly disappears in a howl from a flat-six being driven hard![burnout](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/burnout.gif)
911 owner for life - this may be the first but won't be the last

Age 14 when my best friends dad drove up in a targa SC. Man I loved that car and I finally have one of my own after 29 additional years of waiting. Love it, love it, love it!!!

As I kid I loved those black on black turbos in all the posters. I got my first 911 at age 11 when I got a Schuco 911R model with an authentic two-tone horn and spare sets of wheels. I swore I would get one and eventually got a great 3.2 Sport about twelve years ago.
Naturally I am indoctrinating my two children and no doubts the kids in the street!
Cheers,
David

42 years old and I've been bitten by the 911 bug. I've been and still am, a 928 lover. I've never bashed the aircooled crowd, but after the research and study I've been doing the 911, this car is so much a part of society and the most pure Porsche in all sense of the word.
I love the simplicity of form, and the raw sound it gives. the car is timeless.

I didn't realize it, until I sold my 73S (my first Porsche). Sometimes you don't know what you've got til it's gone (I think that's how the song goes)
