When did you first know you had to have a 911?

The first book I ever voluntarily read from cover to cover was "The Hunt for Red October" by Tom Clancy. Jack Ryan's wife drove a British Racing Green 911--that is what made me realize they were cool. Eighteen year ago when I turned 16 my Mom bought me a a 1966 911, I drove it every day for five years. Thinking it was the right thing to do I sold it for a more reliable car for college. Ten long years later I finally replaced it with a 993. When my wife agreed to purchasing a sports car it never occurred to me to consider anything other than a Porsche.

I was 5 years old and my dad came home one evening with a brand new, bright orange 911T targa. I didn't know what it was but it looked cool. He hung onto that car and had it restored but sold it before I was old enough to drive it. I still remember the smile it put on my face anytime he really let the thing loose and I was in the passenger seat. Still made me smile even as a teenager. That plus four other people on my street who had 911sc's and carreras right about when I got my license kept the fire going. When I saw a 993 some years later I knew THAT was the car I wanted. I still haven't been as moved by any other 911 variant like that 993 that one evening. Black one at dusk with xenons...incredible! Now I'm lucky enough to have one

Dating outselves here, but I guess it was the late 70's and early 80's having posters with girls and 911's on them. I remember a girl leaning on the whale tail of a 911 turbo w/ a surf board. I had a magazine which for the life of me I can't remember which, and it had a picture of an orange 911 from a top view, all the curves so pronounced. It was car **** at it's best.
Fast forward a few years, married, had a few bucks saved. I wanted a convertible and the wife and I stumbled across a '95 993 Cab white/blue. Went in and drove it seperately, both returning with huge smiles on our face. We were walking back to our car and she said 'if you want it, lets go back and get it' ... so we did...

Wow, many of you guys started your addiction young.
When I grew up in HK I always confused the Porsche with the VW and I was not impressed.
I first sat in a moving Porsche in 1980. It was a bown 911, and it pinned me to the seats. Then in 1985 an AA&Co partner gave me a ride in his 911 again, and I again felt the rush of acceleration. I liked it but was not hooked.
In August 2002 Pin and I exchanged rides. He drove my M5 and I drove his 993 C4S with PSS9s. Boy was I hooked. I could not convince my wife to have a Porsche then, so I bought a super-charhed Miata to tide me over. Still I started reading all I could about the 993. Pin and I exchanged rides again in February 2003, and I knew I had to have a 993. Not just a Carrera, but a 993. I looked and looked and found my Ruf BTR in June 2003. I finally got the car here in December 2003, and you folks know the rest of the story.

My dad tainted me when I was baby. He bought a 1973 911T brand new. That bright orange with white PORSCHE script was the coolest.
BTW - It sits in my brother's garage awaiting a full restoration and is still beautiful.

Ahhh yes, the Porsche addiction. I was probably 10 yrs old when one of my uncles introduced me to fast cars. He had a somewhat race prepared RSR replica. It was real fast and I was a Porsche enthusiast ever since. My first p-car was a 77 911S, which I got in 1981 when I was 19. I've had a 911 ever since. 82 SC, 84 Carrera, 88 Cab, 88 930, 96 TT, 04 GT3 (2).

There must have been a grand plan to hook me, as I got it from every direction. As a young kid, my uncle had a 356 which wowed me every time they came to visit. Steve McQueen lived up the street and was cool enough to stop and say hi while I drooled on his cars (though I mainly remember the red Ferrari). In my teens, the biggest disc jockey in town would frequently hand me the keys to his 1966 911 and let me take it for a spin. In my teens, I worked next door to the Porsche dealer. I came within a hair of buying a friend's 356 in 1966 (see pic below), but hesitated, and had to wait until I was 44 for my first 911 (new RS America). Since then the obsession just grows!
It was just about 40 years to the day after I passed on the black 356 below that I finally got a 356 - still had to have one after all those years!

Damn jcnesq - LOVE those pictures! 'Stangs all over the place, and it's not even a car show!
I think it happened for me when I bought one. I'd always liked Porsches (although my aunt's 928S4 was the source of most lust as a child)...
It wasn't until seeing my first 965 that I knew I wanted a 911 bad, and seeing my first 993GT2, in Speed Yellow, just after the 996's introduction (with a kid of about my age at the time - 18 - driving it in central London on Qatari plates) that I knew I HAD to have a 993. I'm a bit older (by 10 years), and it's not a GT2 but I'm not complaining.

Interesting tails.
It was the summer of 78 for me. I spent the past few summers with a high school buddy rebuilding a BMW 2002, Helped keep an Audi 100 LS alive and started a restoration on a Citroen SM which we never completed. We acquired a 71 911E and started a complete restoration project on it. Although the car was in a pretty sad state I realized how simple and straight forward they were to work on. After the completion of the project we drove the car from North Jersey to LaJolla CA in under 36 hours. This was the real clincher. The car handled great had a very stable top end which we spent most of the trip testing and after all the young girls in LaJolla wanted to know the boys with the Porsche, I decided after college I would have to have one for everyday use. So immediately after graduation I sold my BMW and purchased a 79 SC, mechanically perfect but 54 door dings. Have owned one ever since and plan too as long as I can.

that red carrera in our driveway
I was maybe 14, 15 years old when a colleague of my father's showed up in a weekend loaner early '84/'85 red carrera targa -- with his mistress in tow (that's another story).
Anyway, I had never seen this classic shape from up close and was utterly fascinated. I had also never sat in one and, oh, I asked and, to my surprise, was given the keys -- not to drive, mind you, but to play around with the ***** and start the engine. I was hooked. It took me another 20 years before I finally bought a 911, but that was the moment I can trace the "desire" back to.
By the way: That colleague never bought the car, he thought the engine was too loud and he could not figure out how to work the targa roof (I actually showed him how to remove it and put it back in -- without the manual).
