Well! Let assume you go for the rebuilt (but I would second Mike's opinion on this) have a try with those respectable independent specialists for another estimate: Leuze Automobile
de Ville de Goyet Their labor is already cheaper then the official dealer, and I'm sure they will give you the same warranty.
Now if you drop your engine yourself you could certainly save another 700 Euros.
Where did you buy your car? Even if it's a while ago, I would ask them too and try to negotiate as this is a non usual failure.

...there are also official dealer mechanics working "at home", but I would not propose that solution for such an important work. You need a warranty on the result.

do you have the possibility to make pics of the damage?

Hi Toga,

Leuze automobile was my dealer for the last 2 years and they did great work... However, I explained what happened and asked for their estimate and it was going to be +/- 10.000€.

The company where I work for are all going to Porsche Antwerpen ( 9 porsche's) and they have a 997 turbo and a 997 gt3 on order...., because we are such a good client for them they did make me a fair offer.

I will try to make some pics this week,

Thanks for the respons

Little update,

They started with the dissambly of the engine and this is what they are going to do:

1 Set of cilinder head gaskets 433,16 433,16
1 Set of piston bounces 117,39 117,39
1 Set of crank shaft bearings 207,93 207,93
1 Set of engine gaskets 62,58 62,58
6 Bearings traction rods 25,31 151,66
1 Crank shaft pulley 2824,86 2824,86
1 Bolt 2,58 2,58
1 Pulley 164,61 164,61
1 Pin 0,4 0,4
2 Belts 8,85 17,7
1 Belt 12,57 12,57
1 Sender belt 45,09 45,09
4 Bolts 5,8 23,2
2 Gaskets 7,89 15,78
1 support 35,65 35,65
22 Mobil 1 7,21 158,62
4 Cleaner 3,8 15,2

The clutch is ok so it doesn't need te be replaced, I already have a LWF.

Are there some things that they can improve while the engine is dissambled?
I'm considering painting the fan, what color should I choose? Yellow, Red, color of the car (vesuvius)

Thanks

Are you going to do a valve job/new guides while you are in there? Certainly much cheaper than later.

Cheers,

Mike

First number is the price of the item, second number is the price of the total (pieces x price of the item).

Little update,

Engine is completly dismantled!

Cilinders and heads are in perfect condition , the bad news is that the guides were worn and they had a lot of wiggle on it (what is the task of those valves?).
They also discovered that the engine harnas was in very bad shape (some wires were without any isolation!!!) so Porsche is going to replace that for free

Ciao

Worn guides is very typical...have they checked the valve stem diameters on those valves. Often when the guides wear the valves take more of a beating. Those valves are your intake and exhaust valves which are supposed to ride in a "guide". The contact between the guide and the valve itself is very critical ; the valves get very hot and the heat has to go somewhere...when the guides are in spec the heat goes up the stem and into the heads through the oil film between the guide and the head. If this gap is too large (i.e. the guide is worn) then the head does not transfer very well and the valve can run hot and fatique. Eventually you can have a valve failure when the valve head breaks off and falls into the combustion chamber...that's very bad!

Get the guides replaced, check the stem size of the valves, grind the valves/seats and hone the guides to the final size...and you are good to go for a lot more miles.

Can you send us a picture of the end of the crank? I am still curious to how badly the crank was beaten by the loose pulley.

Cheers,

Mike

They are going to replace the guides and they also ordered a complete set of valves. When all the work is done the engine is going to be as good as new...

How is the work going on your car? Did you feel a difference after the rebuild?

Thanks

As a new forum reader and as a pending 993 owner I would like to thank all of you posting on this thread as it represents a virtual 993 Engine 101 class from top to bottom.

Delanobe- best of luck with the rebuild and the bright side is that you won't be doing any maint. for quite some time!

Again thanks to all posting in this thread I find this informative enough to join the list as member. As they say "it's worth the price of admission"!

Just came back from the shop and the complete rebuild is done :-)

They did some kind of treatment of the cilinders and heads, used some lighter ARP rod bolts, replaced the valves and guides, replaced all bearings, wiring harnes etc.....

They will do a dino test tommorrow!

And they painted the fan housing in Vesuvius and the fan in ferrari yellow.

When the car is ready I will post some pictures!!

I hope you can include a picture of the end of your old crank...I would like to see the damage..

Sounds like you will get a "new" car!

Cheers,

Mike
