Question DIY procedure for replacing hydraulic lifters

Is there one? I have a ticking noise when hot that persists in spite of having switched to Mobil 1 0W-40.

I can figure out how to remive the covers (is a new gasket required?) but what about the rocker itself. Is it obvious how to remove it? Does anyone have any pictures. As ususal the factory books skim over details. What we need is a Bentley repair book for these cars.

In reading the archives there seems to be no concensus as to whether replacement of the lifters is necessary.

Why is there a noise anyway? Is this the valve hitting on the arm because the lifter is not pressurized? Sounds like something you don't want happening...

Sorry for all the questions but I want to jump on it if required since the car only has 6k miles.

Hi Luis,

How loud is the ticking? These engines are quite noisy mechanically (which we all love) and mine has a low level of valve "ticking" when hot. Its not a loud "tick-tick-tick" but if you listen you can hear them clearly.

Did you say your car only has 6000 miles? WOW! My car has 75,000 miles and is relatively quiet. Maybe you have a blocked lifter because the car has not been driven enough? Get that car out on the road and give it some exercise! A good DE or a couple of hundred mile run might help.

Luis;

I have done the repair. It is a task however it is not that difficult. I do wonder about your symptoms though? Usually the loud ticking occurs on start up, because the hydraulic lifters cannot build pressure and pump up. The noise that you are hearing in this situation is from the increase in clearance in the lifter causing greater lash. The reason for failure is that the viton seal breaks down, causing the oil to pass by the lifter.

Mike:

I bought it with 5,500 miles a few months ago and have 'opened her' up quite a bit, particularly during the Jectron/Ventil sauber tankful. I did hear a low level "clickety-clickety" in the black car I owned before this one so I'm familiar with the normal sound you are describing. This one is not LOUD, but it's a distinct tic-tic-tic (highly technical terms, I know...)on the passenger side exhaust side.

Kevin:
I'm a bit confused as well since I'd expect it to make the sound when cold and to quiet down when hot. I did a search and someone else had described the same phenomenon I'm hearing.
Thanks!

Had the same thing happen to my 25k mile car this spring on initial start-up after winter storage. Driver's side by the exhaust. Not only was it ticking, but was noticeably lower on power as well. Solution involved 6 new lifters, and now it's back to it's normal sound.

Ah, got it now. If all the valves have a low clicking sound, not one valve stands out, then no problem. On your car, sounds like one is standing out which leads to the conclusion of new lifters...

Luis,

Once you've opened up the valve cover, it's all pretty self evident. But as others here have said, the level of ticking you hear may be normal. I'd have a trusted mechanic who knows Porsches, especially 964/993 models, give it a listen. It IS an easy DIY task, but why open it up if all is well.

Default Lifters ticking Porsche Panamera 4S

Hello this problem is wide spread in the Porsche family of cars. My car started this ticking/tapping sound about three months ago and has gradually gotten louder.
How hard is this job to do for a moderate mechanically inclined DIY project myself.

This may help, though it turned out that the noise on MadTurk's car isn't the lifters?

Though I didn’t do the job mu myself alone changing the lifters is not too difficult. It’s tight in there for sure. Hope you don’t have big hands

I've done them myself. Not a terribly difficult job. Just time consuming and tedious. I went slow and made sure all the torque values were correct. There is a DIY on here that walks you through it pretty well.

Wink

I changed the top 6 lifters as i took the engine out.
Thought it was a daunting task at first (as i am not a mechanic), but was very easy to do. Especially since plugs were out/gearbox out hence easy to turn the cams by hands to the right position which is essential for torquing correctly the 2 hex bolts per lifter.
I would say could probably be a bit more tricky with engine in, as access is limited, but certainly doable.

I'll do the bottom 6 if required with engine in-situ.

Personnally, the online DIY info made it look more difficult than it actually is. But i probably over analyse the online info
