IMO, the 993 is absolute peak/unmatchable aesthetics both exterior and interior and I think that is the main source of my desire for the car.
As an example, if every 993 was a water cooled mezger variant with no cost saving measures/reliability questions I would certainly still want one based on looks alone.
Had a 993 C2, traded it (though felt like a mistake at the time) and had a 997.2 before my current 993. Was the 997 a bad car? No, certainly not, but every time I drove it and looked back on it after a drive, the only thing it did was make me miss/long for the 993.
Not trying to discount the significance of the last generation of air cooled engines, but allow me to present it in a different way.
If the 996 was initially introduced with the same styling but with the M64/21 and therefore the last air cooled Porsche, would you want one over a 993?
For me, absolutely not.

^ This is true. Personally, not the most important thing to me but a matter of coincidence.

To be honest, when the 996.1 was first released, I liked the design of it at that time (not so much the front headlights of 996 Turbo and 996.2). The problem to me is that 996 body style did not age very well, which is the exact opposite of the 993.
For those who want to enter 993 ownership, I believe the prices are going to stagnate at best, I don't see why they would fall down especially since :
- those of us who dreamt of owning a 993 in our teenage years are probably now in a better financial place to afford one and tick the item from their bucket list,
- besides what was mentioned above (no more aircooled 911 produced), I would add that even less original cars are available since some are used for restomod...
- the ones like us who found their 993 are going to hold on to them until we go under so...
From someone who was waiting too long to enter 993 ownership and missed the boat in the mid 2010s when prices exploded (x2), I'd certainly recommend to enter 993 ownership as soon as you can, good cars are becoming more difficult to find especially if you have very specific requirements.
For instance, I was never able to find a black Variocam NB C2 coupe with low mileage (60-70kmiles) for a decent price (less than 6 figures) so I settled for no Varioram :-D

I went to this car museum a while ago and it just so happened that the museum had a retrospective display of every single 911 generation from early 911s to 991.1 included.
I know it sound cheesy but as I walked in front of each generation of 911, my heartbeat suddenly increased when my eyes were laid on the 993 C2 coupe that was on display. That's when I knew I had to get my **** together, stop looking ads without pulling the trigger and seriously commit to buying a 993.
This was my "this is it" moment.

996 gets a lot of praise from all Youtube car video makers (Hoovie, Doug DeMuro, JayEmm, etc.) It's almost like they're praising the "ugly duckling" because they want to get likes and brownie points from the owners.
Sure, it's a good car. Faster than 993. Probably better in almost every way. Much better value too if you just measure things in numbers.
But it's damn ugly. That's why you can buy roughly three 996's for the price of one 993.
There is a reason for that.
You can also have a 220 pound ugly wife too who can cook great food and has a nice personality. Or you can have a hot fitness chick.
Life is full of choices.

I consider myself sort of a 996 ambassador - always demonstrating it (and defending it) to other Porsche owners at meet ups. It's not fully into "classic car territory" like the 993, which has dramatically retro proportions and curves. But it has a quirky charm, and it is the most analog of the modern 911s. While the 993 is my dream car, I have a special fascination with the 996.

Ugly is a matter of perspective and can't be ascertained one way or another. People used to say the same about the 964.

I have had a couple of 911SC's which were really good cars. I was driving my 993 with my wife yesterday and a 911SC targa passed by me and I so love the style of those 74-89 cars. The thing for me with the 993 is that it still drives like a classic 911 but it really is comfortable and the great thing is the a/c works consistently. So it kind of blends modern and classic for me. I have a 125,000 mile 993C4 that has been very reliable and that helps with the warm feelings for it too. It hardly has a rattle in it and still so very tight.

I am at 50K for agreed value on my 125K miles c4. I think it is low. I don't think I could get on BAT and buy my car for 50K

One more major issue that I would ad is that from the rear portion of the doors forward inside and out it is the same as a Boxster. Most everyone understands the "why" Porsche did this but when the original buyers were ponying up big dollars I could see the sentiment.
