totally true and is clearly a big factor in the general run up in prices.

there also seems to be an increase in interest in all air-cooled 911s lately and those folks that are looking to get into one are realizing what we've all known for ever, that the 993 is the factory hot rod; the pinnacle of the air-cooled era.

With the current market, what modifications do you think would hurt prices. What modifications would have no effect. And what modification do you think might increase value (if any?)

im not selling my car but can’t help wonder if I were to sell it, what would I need or want to change back to stock?

Or are we at the point where an intelligently modded 993 retains or improves full value?

Everyone’s tastes are different but clearly in this market, these are “Collectors” paying top dollar for mostly unmolested 993s.

just my off the cuff response:
most mods are negative leaning....
seems the high dollar cars are very close to original...
except:
hard back seats, certain wheels and certain invisible upgrades like the
clutch slave bit, the Porsche classic radio

it takes a lot of discipline to leave good enough alone....
but it certainly does pay off...

All markets are like this. Untouched cars fare better.

My car was bone stock when I bought it. I made extensive modifications since then. I knew full well I was doing nothing for resale.

I don’t care. The car drives better, it looks better, it is better. I really couldn’t care less what the BAT crowd think. I suspect many of these high dollar trophy cars will hardly be driven anyway. Just a hunch.

If you want to sell, basically revert the car back to stock and restore ride height to at least ROW.

Anything easily reversible shouldn’t be a problem (exhaust, decals, radio , etc). I don’t consider replacing shocks as a mod but a necessity.

Things that change the character of the car will definitely limit the pool of buyers if it doesn’t impact price. Superchargers, race bushings, re-gearing, and LWF come to mind. Personally, one reason I bought the 993 I have is because it had both been regeared and had a LWF installed. Truth be told in this market, you only need two determined bidders that want the same mods you have.

Not that they aren’t worth owning, but they are cars that 2 or 3 years ago rennlisters would pass over due to paint work or questionable mileage (odometer disconnected)

With somewhat limited supply in this market sellers are putting these previously undesirable cars on the market and getting top dollar. When I look closely I can see the marring and glue around the odometers and of course carfax shows 20k miles in 2003 and 21k miles in 2021 with no record in between. That reads as a disconnected odometer to me. Not a car I want to touch… Other sellers state “all original paint” but when metered the seller is “shocked” to find the entire left side was resprayed and has body filler.
Nothing wrong with some paint work, but the non disclosure would cause me to walk every time.

If you have a good clean honest example I say hold. They will only continue to appreciate and in 10 - 15 years when the base price for a new 911 is approaching $200k a perfect 993 may feel like a bargain at over $200k ?
+1
I kind of suspect some of the low mileage examples have their odometers "worked" on, either to repair or disconnected purposely to keep the miles low. Are there other ways to tell the true mileage of 993 other than the ODO? I think newer cars also keep track of the mileage in ECU...

I found the below in a thread that might answer your question. I don't know how it works as I've never tried reading my 1995 993 OBD I with a reader but it looks interesting and I think the next time my 993 is in for service I'll ask them to tell me how many hours are on my engine.

If you're still not convinced, check the airbag, there the systems stores all hours the system got powered by the car; means it counts hours even only if the key sticks at position 2, not running the engine. If that doesn't corresponds with the hours from the DME, then there is something fishy with the car!

Default '97 Carrera S, silver, 58k-ish, 4-Owners .. @BAT Sold $171K + fee's ....

This 993 widebody appreciation is nut's! . Who-da thunk. . .

1997 993 Carrera 4S - Yellow w/ black base interior.

There's a yellow 1997 993 4S on auction which doesn't match the production build sticker... Does anyone catch this? Production sticker indicates "Leather dash & Door panels" - not present on this uber low mileage yellow 4S in CT. . Additionally, there are other production vs actual discrepancies.. Hard to miss these inconsistencies..

Our 993 Carrera's are looking better by the minute....

When you're talking about a car with 1100 +/- miles and what will probably be a $ 250K + sale price, EVERYTHING BETTER BE IN ORDER. This is a car that's going into a collection and it will probably never see the street again. I'd hope that every single detail is exactly correct- or start deducting $$.
