The only people fuming regarding the digital display and push start button are existing owners. Chances are that anyone new to Porsche / 911 is already accustomed to both of these things in their previous cars. For me personally , this will be my first 911, a digital display and a push start button does absolutely nothing to squash my enthusiasm as I look forward to taking delivery. In 2 years this will become a non issue, similarly when the 992.1 came out people were all up in arms regarding the reduction to only one analog display.

Yea, brand heritage is so meaningless.

Thank god the hybrid system wasn't the failure that Luke experienced.

If it was, Rennlist might implode from the collective "I told you so" by the 992.2 FUD peanut gallery.

I agree, and this will be my first 911 as well. While I love the history of 911 and 60 years of refinement, I'm with you in that I don't have the "but I love it the old way" historical experience to overcome. I have these digital gauges in my '24 Cayenne and LOVE them. The colors are brilliant, black level perfect, and you can't see the pixel structure at all. I'm thinking they're OLED. They're so configurable to show you what values you prioritize seeing. I specifically wanted the 992.2 because one of the big gripes on the 992.1 is that the steering wheel blocks the speedometer and fuel gauge (kind of important in a car that can accidentally exceed speed limits easily, with only a 16 gallon tank). The option to configure your tach with noon-as-redline if you want is unique to the new 911 and I can't wait to try that.

I can completely understand that existing 911 owners think stuff like the manual transmission, analog tach and twist start have to stay forever though. It'd be great if Porsche offered them as options as they'll offer a zillion other "heritage" options.

It's a crappy design. The function is irrelevant to the discussion or my criticism. If I wanted to twist a key, analog tach & manual, I'd buy an air-cooled. Not every criticism infers someone is a luddite or an existing owner. Yes, twist to start has a great heritage and it's too bad it was scrapped. However...

It looks as though the bean-counters at PAG grabbed some VW designers and tasked them with a budget-minded push button start. Take that mentality and extend it to "what else are they doing this to in the build/design process?"
It's unimaginative and lacks an integrated design language. I'm sure they were working on it for years, yet this is what they came up with on a $150k sportscar? Looks like a wart:


My Land Cruiser has a nicer button. I'll deal with it whenever I get my 992.2 Targa 4 GTS, but I hope they come out with something better for the 994.

Existing owner. Second 911. Lifelong Porsche fan (since I was 10, so about 42 years). Never liked another brand (or as much). Been passionate about Porsche. But....I could care less about the start button. It has nothing to do with LeMans. It was a cost savings issue why they put it on the left. As a matter of fact, if they had an option, I'd have it on the right side. Much easier to get in and start the car while closing the door. It has zero to do with heritage.

Looks like Porsche has 3 supporters for the 992.2 on the thread, and 100 naysayers…I suppose Porsche may have finally made the 996 look good with the 992.2!

If you're counting me as a 992.2 supporter....ummh. don't yet. lol. Jury is still out for me on the hybrid. I wouldn't touch it until the next version (994) comes out. New engine, new turbo, new motor. Too much 'new' going on for me. That start button will probably not have an issue though.

Key on the left IS a tradition of Porsche, it's storied origin is irrelevant and the new design sucks.

For the 992.1, the steering wheel does not block access to view the speedometer and does not prevent viewing of fuel level or coolant temps.

In the 992.1 5-dial layout, the left outside gauge displays the outside temp and time. The outside right gauge displays the analog fuel level and analog water temp.

The inner 2 display gauges are programmable. The left gauge displays the speedometer and is not blocked by the steering wheel. Using the steering wheels buttons, one can toggle through various viewable options. The right inner gauge shows digital water temp along with a digital fuel level, oil temp and battery voltage. It too has the ability to toggle through various options for a driver's preference and is not blocked by the steering wheel. So, all critical items are viewable on the 2 inner gauges, just like the 992.2.

For those worried about running out of gas because they couldn't see the gauge.... for a measly $230, a 23.7-gallon tank was available for a 992.1. Thats almost 600 miles to a tank...heck my Prius can't do that!

The colors and black levels are the same for both 992.1 and 992.2 models. While the 992.2 will have the exact dash cluster as your '24 Cayenne, functionality wise it will do the same functions as a 992.1.

So, I'm really not sure why the uproar over not seeing all 5 gauges...for those of us that have owned previous 911 models, this has always been the case...especially if you owned an air-cooled 911.

As for the 992.2 digital tach and push to start button...it's a personal preference.

I must admit that I too was a little disappointed with cross utilization of non 911 parts into a 911, but in reality the 911 has never used 100% parts designed strictly for 911's.

The large center analog tach and keyless twist starter switch were cool features and synonymous with 992.1's... but technology and manufacturing cost sometimes drive change.

With or without those items...it doesn't take away the ear-to-ear grin when driving this car.

You can tell yourself all this stuff and I honestly take no pleasure nor do I want to mar anyone's excitement for their car, but to me this is just the continued watering down of something that before you know it is no longer very special. First they came for our twisty-keys, and I did not speak out...
