Default 992 GTS - Harry's garage

Well it seems that Mr Metcalfe is rather fond of the 992 GTS as a road car.

He certainly wasn't afraid to call out both the 992 Carrera S and the 992 GT3 for the shortcomings as he saw them. Interestingly he didn't pull the sound meter out on this one, and seemed to drive the whole time with the sunroof open.

It seems the universe continues to want me to upgrade. Anyone lucky enough to be driving around in a new GTS?

^ If you consider everything he liked about the GTS, you can say pretty much the same about the S. He didn’t pull out the sound meter for the GTS even though we all know it was surely just as loud in the cabin

Methinks he reviewed the S when he was having a bad day

He was also rather effusive of the 992 Turbo S

That 992 Carrera S review was a real low point for HM. He’s normally very good. I agree with you that he must have been feeling extra bitchy when he did it — the whole obsession of judging a sports car with a sound meter is absolutely ridiculous and I think he knows it.

He mentions that the 997 GTS had the GT3 engine when he was describing his "dislike". This is... well, it's just wrong is what it is.

I don't watch Harry much but I have to wonder how he made a gaffe like that.

Otherwise I can't seem to get enough vids about the GTS so was a good watch.

He says 2S is redundant. I see it the other way. Get the 2S in manual (which includes chrono), and get it the way you want it for much less cost.

I have to agree as well. But it would be interesting to drive an S and GTS back to back. Not sure it will happen any time soon for me though

Yes, I noticed that too. I wondered if that was a hole in my knowledge, that the 997 GTS had some sort of detuned GT3 engine, but I highly doubted it. And if it is not a detuned GT3 engine, then he has forgotten about the 991.1 GTS too. Lose/lose!

The way I always understood it, the GTS was the S with the factory "powerkit" i.e. X51.

I'm sure it's a google search away, but I vaguely recall the 991.1 getting different intake plenum, and the 991.2 getting different turbos. The rest is software. Not sure about the 997... and also not sure I'm 100% correct.

But I am pretty certain that no Carrera GTS ever got the GT3 engine, de-tuned or otherwise.

No generation of GTS has had a GT3 motor. Power pack version of Carrera engine.

I do wonder how his review would have changed with a Carrera S manual/sport package/RWS back to back with the GTS.

Thanks for posting that. The extra power is irrelevant to me. The S has more than enough. I ordered the GTS for the suspension, the brakes, the shorter gear lever, and the (huge advantage to me) ability to deactivate autoblip independently. The shorter gear lever could probably be easily retrofitted into the S; the other things would be difficult or impossible to retrofit. Harry implies that there is more to the gearbox than just a shorter lever, but I haven’t read that anywhere else. Regardless, it was great to hear how giddy he was about the gearbox in the GTS. When I configured the S vs the GTS, the delta was $7k, which I think is a bargain. Mine is currently scheduled to arrive in May. I also like the reduced sound insulation in the GTS. Hopefully, that will add to the driver-car connection.

I guess it comes down to whose camp you are in:
  1. Herry's Garage: "The 992 S is redundant"
  2. Nick Murray: "The 992 GTS is a waste of money for very little improvement"
I'm leaning towards Nick Murray tbh. I was glad to hear another vote for the 7MT.

Awesome. I agree that the power hike is almost irrelevant. The brakes are a big selling point for me.

Recently I parked my car near a 991.2 GT3 touring, and took a few pics. Aesthetically speaking, my car suddenly looked very under-braked!

Let us know how you find the GTS when it arrives.
