I know, too early, but any speculations on the cause? Lithium batteries? Has Musk or Tesla groupies, been seen in the area, recently? 🤔

I don’t believe that the loss of one car carrier vessel is close to material to the total pure car carrier (pcc) vessel fleet - although the 7,000+ figure is for all ro-ro vessels, of which pcc vessels are only one type.

However, I also believe that this immateriality is only one small factor among the large number of complications that will delay deliveries of VWAG vehicles following the loss of the Felicity Ace.

The "Pool" in the 718 GTS forum has the "Smart Money" on an EV fire with Sea Water as the Fire Suppressant just causing a larger problem. Thus they could not control the fire and had to abandon ship.

We will have to wait and see what the cause and issues were

Is there any documentation of what was on board for other VW brands? The Lambo forum was speculating on what Lamborghini’s were on there

Good to hear the crew is safe!
I imagine the Panamera GTS Sport Turismo that I ordered March 2021, and is confirmed to be on the Felicity Ace, will not arrive at the dealer next month. ugh

Yikes, any word from your dealership on how they plan to move forward?

Go figure my Cayenne GTS Coupe has been sitting at the port since December 6 waiting to get on a boat and now it’s probably sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic…

They don't even know yet if all of the cars are lost. It'll be awhile before they can get a crew back on there to assess the damage. Not even sure if the fire is out yet.

Well, for those of you wondering if the cars can be saved my lay-persons understanding of the laws of salvage is that once a vessel is abandoned, as this one has been, no permission is required for a 3rd party to salvage it. As in take it in tow for example. If that happens then a whole different set of rules come in to play, the ship and cargo effectively become the property of the person or persons salvaging it.

On the other hand even if the ship is saved VW will have a claim against the shippers, insurance will kick in etc. Either way the cargo is toast literally and figuratively. I very much doubt any of these cars will escape the crusher.

VW will likely need to just declare this a total loss for insurance purposes - regardless of if there are any cars that may be salvageable.

Or they will hit the market as used vehicles. Sold from the salvage company. Could get quite interesting.

I'd hope the VIN's would marked so that they cant be insured or registered if declared lost.

It's a fluid situation. My dealer knows nothing. Porsche NA knows little. My guess I'll be waiting another 9 to 12 months for a car.

Speculation is just that, speculation. All we KNOW is that the vessel is on fire, or was on fire, it contains up to 4000 cars, of which about 800 are Porsches, and that it was abandoned by the crew and is adrift.

For all we know, the fire burned itself out/was contained to specific decks and other decks in the hold are untouched and many vehicles will still be delivered.

Or the ship might burn to the waterline, sink, and all gets delivered to Davy Jones.

Maritime salvage laws are interesting. Totally worthy of their own discussion.
