Lithium battery fires probably even harder to put out at sea.

What a tragedy. The important thing is that the crew were safely evacuated. I'm confident Porsche will prioritize rebuilding all of the cars that were aboard this ship.

There appears to be a Polish article here with a picture. Hard to tell if the photo is genuine (I don’t speak Polish (although Google translate worked)) but if it is, it doesn’t look good.

Here's the Google Translation of the Greek article above:

Car carrier fire in the Atlantic

A fire broke out earlier today in MOL's Felicity Ace management carrier west of the Atlantic Azores. The 200-meter ship was traveling from Emden, Germany to the American port of Davisville and issued a warning signal when a fire broke out.
Greek-owned shipping once again proved its solidarity and contribution to maritime safety as Polembros Shipping Limited's Resilient Warrior tanker rescued the 22 crew members (Russians and Filipinos) of Felicity Ace.
The crew members left the car carrier, boarded two lifeboats and were picked up by the tanker. A helicopter of the Portuguese Coast Guard has so far picked up the eleven crew members from the Resilient Warrior.
In communication of the Maritime Chronicles with Polembros Shipping Limited, the company expresses its warm congratulations to Captain Spyridon Tsega and the crew members of the Resilient Warrior who contributed the most to the rescue of their colleagues.

And if the photo from the Polish story is accurate, that ship is headed for the ocean floor. Certainly, the cargo is toast.

She can carry up to 5,200 cars and seems to have been chartered by VW. No idea how full she was but that’s a lot of disappointed people and one hell of an insurance claim for VW.

I would imagine VW will prioritise a replacement build for customers whose cars are on board which is then going to have a knock on effect of further delays for everyone else in the queue. The most important thing is that all 22 crew are off but feel for all of you that have a car on board. Hopefully there is more news soon.

That photo doesn't look right - looks like a container ship rather than a car carrier.

I was thinking the same thing. If that's a RoRo, then it has melted or something because that's not what a car carrier looks like. In any event, glad to hear that the crew is reportedly safe. Very, very sorry for the folks with a car on that ship. I would be devastated.
