992 gts or Shelby gt500 with carbon wheels

No where near the same type of vehicle - what are you looking for? Sure, the Ford has a lot of performance (same argument as a Corvette). But it's no 911. Can't speak to the Shelby - never had one. DID have a C6 and C7 Corvette so I know that vehicle pretty well. Can't imagine wanting carbon fiber wheels either - very pretty, quite the novelty, a lot of money spinning in a rough environment about 2 inches from disaster constantly. After having the Vette experiences I'll say they're like a very pretty date that's fun for a period (limited period) of time but they aren't marrying material. You WANT to spend the rest of your life with a 911.

I have driven my buddies GT500 - it was a 2020 iirc. Beast of a car, very much more muscle car, and with a lot of HP - really hard to get all that power down. It is really not a easy comparison, as I would relate that category as a muscle car (more in line with the Dodge Demon/Hellcat/Mustang GT 350/500) as opposed to more sports car like the 911 even corvette C8, etc. It is a lot heavier and felt way less nimble again like muscle cars of old. Fit and finish was way better than I thought it would be.
His did not have the CF wheels, not sure that buys much from a feel standpoint, but the 911 is a very different tool than the GT500 or 350. While I liked kicking the back end around a bit on the mustang, I would not trade my 911s for it. Would be nice to have one for a little muscle car kick as an addon vehicle for fun, but if picking one - and money not being an issue the 911 is the one I would pick.

Very different experiences. It comes down to your use of the car.
As a daily driver…
You can take a 911 anywhere. It goes with anything. It is classic and understated. It flies under the radar, but is an elegant driver.
That GT500 will look out of place at that fine restaurant that your significant other enjoys. It is a loud “look at me car” that is “trying hard” while sending the message “blue collar hero”.
As a weekend car…
It’s not hard to make some Porsche friends for adventurous driving to that little cafe everyone loves. Enthusiasts are super nerdy about build options and spec sheets. White collar professional and/or business owner crowd.
You’re driving the GT500 to the cars and coffee by yourself. You’re top dog of the Mustang owners and dealing with Hellcat drivers talking smack about your car. Lots of vaping and conversations with guys in their early 20s. Everyone’s nice, but lots of talk about drag racing.
As a track car…
Endless support from fellow Porsche owners on modifications and tweaks. Club and PDE events with great people at road courses. At a drag strip, you look like an a-hole and brought the wrong car.
When you wrestle the GT500 around the road course, people will tell you that it looks and sounds fast, but you will be the only GT500 there. At the drag strip, those Hellcat owners are talking smack.
Road trip/cross country…
You can take 911 across the country today and it will feel fast and comfortable. Excellent gas mileage at speed. Center locks will be a pain in the *** when you get a flat.
The GT500 will tax your body and your senses on that drive. Cops will see/hear you coming. When you break that carbon fiber wheel on that rural backroad, you’re sitting there on the phone with the realization that you’re effed.

The GT500 is an extremely capable car...way more than a muscle car. For GTS money you could get a GT500 and a 987.2 Cayman or maybe a 997.1. My 992 is a street car. My C4 Vette is my track car. I dunno what you call my K20 swapped X1/9?

Depends on what criteria you assess the vehicles by. I can tell you this after seeing a couple of new C8s recently - they haven't figured out how to fix something yet and that's the "wave". What I'm talking about is looking down the side of the car - they are all wavy as hell and you can see mold seams, etc. Panel gap (compared to a Porsche or other primarily metal car) is horrific. I get it's a plastic car and that material is much more likely to "move" with temp changes but the waviness of the panels is disappointing and super obvious. A high degree of orange peel in the paint is baseline. Chipping at body panel interfaces is common on all new Vettes until Bowling Green figures out how to put them together in a way to avoid it. My C6 had wavy panels / orange peel extraordinaire as did my C7 and the C8s I have seen have still been horrible. After seeing the smooth side of a Porsche that gets very hard to accept. Again - it's all in what you want and what your priorities are. Nothing is pretty about the C8 - the 911 is absolutely a pretty car.

Build quality, fit and finish, are going to be much higher on the Porsche. The GT500 will be a monster. If you like muscle cars and insane power, fun on the street, pick the GT500. If you want a better handling car, build quality and prestige, and a car on a twisty track that will dominate, pick the Porsche.

If you can’t drive both those cars and make your own decision you need to start over. Also post the same question on the Mustang forum and see what you get for answers.

I don’t know why you’d put carbon wheels on a gt500. That’s an expensive consumable

In the Ford camp, the GT350 is the better balanced car, sweeter on the track. The best normally aspirated V-8 (flat plane crank) on the planet ... well, maybe the Ferrari 458 Pista is better. Horses for courses, but with experience in the junior partner of the Shelby universe, the Porsche hands down.

992 all day long. I had 2 GT350’s and the quality was garbage. No more Fords for me.
