I think alot of those C&D Lightening Lap times have to be taken in context.
While the the track is the same, the drivers are not, nor are the time and dates each lap is set.
So, yes, while the GT500 puts down a rather heroic lap time vis-a-vis a 911T as well as a 991.2 GT3, it's really not comparable given that the GT500 lap time was set almost two years after the 911T lap time was set (2021 versus 2019) and three years after the GT3 (2021 versus 2018).
And say all of this being a fan of the GT500 (and the 350), but also a fan of the Porsche obviously, without quaffing too deeply from the Stuttgart Kool-Aid punch bowl.

same driver, same condition, and same tires. The 911 carrera is a better car overall, but to say an s will spank it on a track and that the 500 have no traction ( some posters basing their opinions from owning from an f80 m3 ) is complete ignorant.
the gt500 competes with Porsche turbos and GT, not the run of mill carrera. I apologize in advance if that sounds a bit harsh.

definitely impressive. clock does seem to be a bit cleaner. zero chance gt500 finds a place in my stable regardless.
mustang had top spot in my attainable dream car list when i was 20. at 50, nope.
but your point is well taken - added/due respect to gt500.

This thread is about GTS. Mine will be a cabrio with three pedals. Not at all the top drag strip spec. But I will hold my head high and nose higher if I line up against a mustang.

50K? I think more like 100-150K. In other words twice the cost. The Shelby with the FC wheel package is around $100K according to that article. Still no love from me for the Shelby - I would be in the Corvette long before the Shelby, but that's not a commentary on the car, just on my personal taste.

There's just a completely different class of street presence, look, and feel between these two cars. It's been said numerous times in this thread alone, many people just can't get away from the fact that the GT500 is still just a mustang. Something you see in a typical American suburb at least 12-15 times a day... with a few extra stripes and decals, and fancy wheels. I'm still of the mind that most folks interested in a 911 just wouldn't be that interested in a mustang, any mustang. There are of course exceptions and the GT500 is a great car. So is the ZL1, Corvette, LC500, AMG GTS, NSX, RS7, M8 and many others... and folks on those brand-specific forums would probably lean their respective directions.

Thinking that the 911 is a better car doesn’t preclude liking or respecting what the Mustang GT500 brings to the table.
As for seeing them 12-15 times per day, depends upon your neighborhood and part of the country.

Whether we want to admit it or not, for a lot of people a car is in big part about image.
Most 911 buyers will never cross shop a Mustang.
Nothing wrong with it, the GT500 is probably a total beast. But the image of a GT500 is very different from that of a 911, and that matters to lots of folks.

I briefly considered a GT500. Agree that the fact that it is still a Mustang played into my decision. It was hard to stomach the thought of my 100k car sitting in a service bay next to a ford fiesta. Having the same dealer experience as someone purchasing a 20k escape is a huge turn off both in the sales and service departments. I'm sure the mustang is one hell of an experience, faster in most situations and will likely hold value better than a base, S or GTS. In the end, it wasn't the experience I was looking for all things considered. 15 years ago, Mustang all day. I would have taken the ability to do endless burnouts and impress all my friends by shredding tires at every red light. At my current age, I like the personality disorder the S has. It's more of a precision instrument and can wear many hats, as opposed to the GT which is purely a sledgehammer. I do however wish my S was just a tad more engaging. That sport exhaust is just not loud enough for me. I think the soft tone approach really diminishes the experience.

I believe you would be in the minority, at least in this forum.

I think I've reached the age where I just don't care about the prestige angle. I'm not impressed by anyone in any car. Well thats not true, I'm impressed by the guy who restored xyz totally by himself and drives his car. Anybody with a few bucks can buy some new car which really...meh, who cares. So a good looking, good performing mustang for $100k less than the Porsche...might be worth driving.

what does it matter what your fancy car sits next to in the service bay? Hell, your new 911 might be next to a 35 year old 924/944 or early 986 boxster thats worth about $3k. What does it matter? As long as the tech is good, and from experience, there are good and bad ford techs and porsche techs, I'm not sure why the car's service companions matter.
