I have a build slot coming up in the new year for a 992 Targa with the option to swap to a cabriolet if I wish.
I'm a serial soft top owner but love the look and idea of a retro looking 992 Targa.
Leaning 4S on either as it will be a daily and a GTS is probably too stiff for that.
Convince me one or other please!
All good choices. Gts won’t be too stiff, but the 4S is fantastic, so there isn’t a need to upsell other than lighting money on fire.
The roof decision is too personal to comment upon. You need to do you. I personally got tired of maintaining soft tops, but neither does the Targa really inspire me.
For me personally, looks and cosmetics issues aside, I really feel like the Targa (at least in the 991 guise) really compromises the driving dynamics that I am looking for in a 911.
That deficiency, for me, is just not something I could live with day-in and day-out. Everyone is different obviously.

Yeah, I’m biased as I own the cab and just love it but I recall being very excited by the prospect
of the Targa and then very disappointed when it came out. To me, the proportions are somehow just not right—it looks too long and too heavy.
Again, I’m way biased, since I think the cab, with the top up or down, is perfection.
The Targa won’t be too stiff as there’s no SPASM option for it (incl the 992 GTS suspension isn’t offered on the Targa). Had both a 991.2 Cab GTS and Targa 4. Visability is a major plus in the Targa but it loses out a little in the open air experience. Although the GTS has more get up a go, I imagine the heavier 992 Targa S won’t be lacking.
I have a Targa on order, so I am also biased. I think the lines are beautiful and although I thing the Cab is a beautiful car as well I am just not as enamored with the butt end of the Cab. I likely won't track the car and rarely will push past 7/10s on public roads, so I don't think the extra weight will be a major factor for me - particularly coming out of 2 M5s. This is 100% personal preference and I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. If you are worried about buyer's remorse, just get both.
I say squash all of that and get a GTS with a glass sunroof. There, I said it.
Seriously though, if you've always loved cabriolets, I think you'll be disappointed with anything less.
For me, I would never get a cab or targa as I only like coupes with sunroofs so I'm the last guy on earth to really help you here.
Best of luck in your decision but the cab is pretty amazing all around for someone living in warm weather climates. I live in the Northeast so it's pretty cold all winter, and am on my cell phone ALL THE TIME talking to clients and friends and couldn't deal with the cab or targa at all. Too much wind noise. I rarely ever have my sunroof open but am looking forward to getting my first 911 glass sunroof coupe next month.

Targa is half pregnant: not a Coupe and not a Convertible. The Targa is heavy and you cannot open/close the top while driving. Cabriolet all the way. Cannot wait for my incoming C2S Cabrio (just got my VIN!)..
What's the weather like in Shropshire? Maybe that's the determinative factor. I live in the Buffalo, NY area and a convertible 350Z was fun-for about 4 months/year. I got rid of it after 17 years because it just got old getting buffeted by the wind and having to find overpasses quickly to put the top back up in sudden downpours.
one advantage of the targa is incredible visibility out the rear - something you don’t have with the cab if top up.
My 1st 911 was a Targa in 1973, That was state of the art then and you couldn't put the top up or down while moving. Nothings changed HaHa. My next six 911's were all cabs and I must say that my current 991.2 with LCA is not a problem at all because of the small rear window. Not a good argument for a coupe. Waiting for an allocation for a 992 Targa GTS. Why no cab after all these years? 70% because my 28 YO twin girls requested it and 30% because I'm just ready for a change. And for those who say you can't use a rear camera with a cab... I did and its simple.
If you've owned convertibles before (either Cabs or others), a Targa is just not the same open roof experience. Also, on the visibility point, the best visibility is in a Cab with the top down.
