How much buffeting with the Targa?

I met a couple at Parade with a 992 Targa 4S and asked why they don’t pop the top…they said they don’t drop it because of buffeting.

They said they’ve had Targa before and didn’t buffet as bad.

Lifelong Porsche owners with also current 981 GT4 and 718 GTS…so seems like they know their P-cars.

I prefer the Targa. I live in the Northeast and want the option of using it as a daily drover, so top up is just important to me as top down - and top up Targa is my preference. I never liked the bump on the back end of the cab, and I also think the Targa is the best looking 911. But like others have said, this is just my preference and there's nothing wrong with either choice.

I’ve had a glass sunroof coupe, cab and Targa 991s in the last 6 years.
The glass sunroof in the coupe lets in nice light but is almost worthless otherwise. It only opens far enough to cause buffeting, about 9” or so.
The Targa is beautiful to look at and has better rearward visibility when “the top is up”. Can’t beat the Transformer top experience to entertain an audience.
However, it cannot and does not replicate the experience of a cab with the top and windows down. The cab, on the other hand, behaves quite a bit like the Targa, sound and experience wise, when the windscreen and windows are up.
My 992 order is for a C4S cab (an S only to get a MT).

When is your cab getting to your dealer? Mine is in Germany at the port awaiting loading to a ship.

Supposedly in the first two weeks of January, but we will see what happens.

That can be solved with a SmartTop (from Mods4cars) which I would add to the Cab as well so that you can open the roof remotely.

But on the Targa I believe the speed is limited to 4mph v. 30 or so in the cab. I've never been anxious about putting the top up or down at a red light in my cabs. The Targa not so much. I never risked moving the car while that huge piece of glass was in motion.
Remote opening/closing a huge plus in both.

I traded my 991.1 cab in for a 2022 Targa. Personally, I don't regret that at all. I find the open air experience to be 85% to 90% of my cab (personal opinion only), and as others have said, I like the wide open rear window and I think the Targa looks fantastic. I no longer track cars, so I find the Targa to be quieter and more comfortable than my cab (which I like, older gentleman that I am). Also, I find that the 992 Targa 4S has quicker response than my 911.1 cab (but could be to changes in PDK and engine).

My $.02

Having owned a few cabs (just picked up my '22 C2S Cab on Saturday!) and a couple of modern Targas ('18 Targa 4S, '19 Targa 4 GTS) here are some random thoughts Needless to say all are nothing but my opinions.
  1. Targa tops rattle. My '18 was intolerable. Much better on the '19.
  2. Wind buffeting with the Targa really sapped the joy out of top down motoring
  3. I think the Targas are better looking, although the 992 Cab is probably the best looking soft top convertible with the top up I've ever seen
  4. Targas seem to hold value better than most 911s, although in the current market everything is nuts
  5. Top down experience in the Cabs is superior to that in the Targas
When the time came to come back to Porsche world I opted for the Cabriolet. And what better time and place to take delivery than November in Chicago?

^ Congrats on your new Cab

As I've stated here repeatedly, top down is by far the best way to enjoy a Cab. Sadly, for a good 4 months per year it's impossible. But as a fellow Chicago area forumer, we are hardy people and I open up the top as soon as temp is over 50 F (just wear a coat, turn on the heat and heated seats, and you're good to go!)

Let's talk about the Targa top rattle. First time hearing this issue. Is this a common problem Rennlist?

I'm a serial cab owner- 5 S2000s,
Lotus Exige, 2 Aston Vantage roadsters, 2 McLarens, Portofino & 718 Spyder
I had planned a 992 Targa GTS
I've driven a 991 GTS Targa, found it stiff and lots of wind buffeting. Also drove a 992 C2 cab and found that a much more engaging proposition. Hence my indecision.
