I'm not sure if the SRB is a gimmick or whether launch control can be considered a gimmick. One definition of gimmick states "A trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or trade." I think both of them may fall into that category, they certainly attract attention. I have both and use both, not often, but occasionally. Would I miss them if they weren't there - no. The CS is plenty fast and, while I have used SRB for passing, did I really need to - probably not. I have found few occasions where simply pressing down the accelerator wasn't enough to accomplish my goal. Are both of those capabilities fun - you bet they are. If you have them, enjoy them but if you don't, I wouldn't worry about it.

 

I've had my C2 for less than 24hrs. I'm already a big fan of the SRB.

 

You’re ahead of me. Took me 5 months before I discovered it. Gimmick, or no gimmick, it’s a lot of fun.

 

The question isn't whether the SR button stiffens up engine mounts and set the car upon Sport+ mode...the unknown is whether the SR button provides 20 seconds of overboost. If so, a dyno would show an increase in HP & TQ.

 

It's not a gimmick... it gives you instant sport response without having to thumb through the modes for those times that you need it. For example, when you need to pass or a BMW M3 comes burbling by trying to make a scene.

I you are behind slow moving traffic and want to prime the engine and transmission, all you have to do it lightly press the throttle and then let go. The car moves into Sport (+) and drops a couple of cogs anyway for 20 seconds.

It was about the first thing the Porsche 992 instructor taught me 2 years ago.

Sounds like just the same thing, just doing it with your foot thats all.

It doesn't matter if you are in comfort or what ever, it just gives you the option of going bananas for 20 seconds without having to press a button. Try it.

But let’s assume the poster is correct…ie, even if it does that, how is pushing on the accelerator for a sec or two, then letting off and finally, waiting for the car to change the mode to Sport +, and drop to a lower gear… any quicker (it isn’t) than pushing the button?

All that said, and based on the paragraph write up from C&D, I’m convinced that the sports response button does more than putting into in sports + mode and dropping to a lower gear. But to quote Aggie (I’ll flip the script), “I’m happy to be proven wrong”, should someone post a Dyno test, or some other authoritative information. But again, even if that’s all the sports response button does, it’s certainly a lot more convenient and quicker, than trying to do this by other means.

For many of us, that’s really the bottom line - how to get the max performance, the quickest way, with the least amount of effort.

 

^ There is no way that "lightly pressing the throttle" switches you into Sport + mode. It would have happened to me a million times by now. But I will try it out again later today

 

Imagine, if you will, how confusing it would be for a driver to be driving along with the mode set to NORMAL, and you’re inching along in stop and go traffic, and you “lightly touch the throttle and then let off”…and all of a sudden, it switches modes on you and drops to a lower gear??! WTF. If it did that, there would be a class action law suite.

All that said, if said trick is available, it should be in the manual…if for no other (legal) reason than to alert/warn drivers of this function.

I think they may be confusing standard "kick down" with sports response. Even then you don't lightly tap the gas, you have to floor it.
