I think this depends a lot on where you live. You might talk to some people on the street you see getting into cars without them and see their experiences. Here are mine:

I’m in CA and used to run without a front plate. In San Francisco, I got three fix it tickets in about 10 years.

Now I live a bit south of San Francisco and frequently drive through Menlo Park and get pulled over anytime something is a miss (once for driving with just one headlight THE DAY IT WENT OUT!!!). Given that, it’s a guarantee that I’d get tickets and my issue is the time to put the plate on, get it approved, then take off again. With a young family, I’d rather spend my time doing other things.

The 992 certainly doesn’t look better with a front plate, but it’s still a great looking car and I’m happy knowing I won’t have to worry about it. I’ve gotten used to it and you can’t see it from the driver seat :-)

I installed my front plate a few weeks ago. The factory front plate mount has 4 screw locations - two toward the top of the plate and two more in the middle. Post #13 in this thread has a great pic. I used double stick tape on the top 1/3 instead of screws, but did screw into the black part of the bumper on the middle of the plate. Seemed like a good compromise and is holding strong. Also, note that there are little plastic tabs on the underside of the bumper that correspond to the factory plate mount so no worries about not getting it perfectly centered.

That doesn't work. I keep my front plate(s) in the glove box in a nice frame. I got pulled over at Potter Marsh in my BMW 650ix on a nice July evening and the very nice Trooper said he'd stopped me for no front plate. I had flipped it up on the dash while he was walking up to the car. When I showed him the plate, he smiled and said, 'It has to be visible when you come by me.' $135 ticket. I never did put that front plate on.

I’m probably an outlier here but I don’t see the big deal about putting a front plate on the car where it is required. I would, of course, prefer not to have a front plate but it really doesn’t bother me that it is there. If you’re worried about resale, the next owner can easily change the front bumper cover if they don’t want the plate. To me, it’s a car I bought to enjoy and whether or not it has a front plate does not affect my enjoyment of the car.

Who cares? I prefer not to risk a ticket or being stopped for something that has no bearing on how the car drives. I can’t see the plate when I’m driving the car and I rarely look at the car just to admire it. I drive the car and enjoy it. Look, I get that a lot of owners want to treat the car like a work of art but, ultimately, it’s just a car, albeit an expensive one.

If it means that much to you, don’t mount the plate. As for me, I don’t really care about it. I tried the tow mount on my 997 but I hated the way it looked because it wasn’t centered, probably my OCD. You need to do what you’re comfortable with, I get that. I said to start that I am an outlier on this topic.

Personal choice. I find it sad that one would walk away from a great car because of two small holes that can easily be corrected. To each his own.

Yes, I find that lots of people care about things that really don’t matter. I care about handling and performance. Everyone is different.

Can you get a ticket if you are out-of-state, say in CA, but your home state doesn't require a front plate? Probably a yes...

I doubt it. You just have to follow the laws in the state that your vehicle is registered in.

WE CARE...My 1980 Targe...1st Porsche...NO PLATE...was stopped once, no citation...Officer said he would not run a plate either if it was his car. Sometimes folks can be their own worse enemy when getting stopped by the police. With all the options today, why would you put holes in a beautiful ride. For some, it doesn't matter because it is just a car, but too many it is our pride of ownership and a ugly front plate is not included in the pride.

It's not about the holes in the bumper. It's about a dealer disregarding their customers preferences. If my dealer is aware that I do not want drilled holes in the bumper, and then proceeds to disregard my request. Then yes. I'd walk away & find a new dealer.

It's purely based off the principle of the matter.

Luckily... my dealer would never do that, and never has. As most would use the tow hook mount at the very least. YMMV
